Horizon Powercat 52 2015 Possible Purchase

Why would you go down from a 64' to a 52'?

Horizon PC 52 is an interesting boat. It's a very nice compromise in so many ways, if you like the compromises. It's a CAT with still many characteristics of a traditional hull power boat. Let me attempt to explain.

First let's talk hull shape. The CAT feature of divided hulls is modified and so it doesn't have the maximum positive CAT characteristics but minimizes the negatives as well. Even dimensions are in between. It has a 22' beam and a 4'3" draft. Beam is wider than a similar length monohull, but narrower than what you'd expect in a CAT. Similarly draft less than you'd expect in a similar displacement monohull but greater than you might expect in a CAT.

Now above deck. It really has all the characteristics of a traditional power boat, but with the greater width and, therefore, space. It's a flybridge MY plain and simple. I do wish it had a lower helm in addition to the one on the bridge and, perhaps some have been built with them.

Overall it's a great compromise boat for those coming from power boats, not necessarily for those coming from CAT sailboats. It does a lot of things well, none necessarily the best. But that's much like Horizon overall. Good solid builder but not the fastest and not the most luxurious and not the most anything but good all the way around.

You get added space in a 52' boat. By comparison to say a Sunseeker Manhattan 52, you pick up 6' of beam, lose some speed, pick up some anchoring comfort (depending on stabilization), gain some efficiency. You have to decide if it fits you and if parting with advantages of your 64' are worth it for the advantages of the PC 52. I bounce around the thought of a CAT for the loop, but while I think of the gain of beam and deck space and the great view one would have, I face the thoughts of speed reduction and of sleeping in sponsons and docking. Just think it all through.

I'm always puzzled by how frequent this question is.
When asked myself, I reply that pretentious boaters aim at the largest boat they can afford, while wise boaters aim at the smaller boat which is just large enough for their needs.

My 54’ is either the biggest small boat or the smallest big boat out there. It fits my needs.

I looked at powerCATS and loved the live-able layout, just had a concern of finding slips that could fit the beam, so I started with a traditional M/Y. But in my future there may be a big/small CAT.

It seems that we both thought along the same lines also with boat choices, my boat being almost exactly of the same size as yours.
And I also ruled out cats mostly for the same reasons.

I was never a fan of Cats but have always been impressed with the Build quality of the Horizon Cats.
