I can't remember the name of the lab that does 24hr turnaround on oil analysis. Recommendations appreciated! By chance, does anyone know of one in Canada? If not, I'll take FL or elsewhere. I asked the surveyor about taking samples for oil from engines, generator and a sample of transmission oil. Surveyor says he doesn't usually do transmission. I thought it was sort of standard. Comments? Thanks! Judy
Hull surveyor or diesel surveyor? Diesel surveyor always cover the gears and take sample. Usually the issue is with generators. Some diesel surveyor do them, others don’t. But no big deal to take samples and submit them at the same time
Heck yes the gears/clutches. Stage 1 coolant samples also. I still maintain a box of Cat SOS sample kits in my shop.
Thanks, Pascal. I almost always have separate diesel surveyors in addition to the hull surveyor, so maybe that's why I was thrown off by this hull surveyor's reluctance to do the tranny sample. No diesel surveyor was available. Boat is in the boonies in Quebec. Any recommendation for overnight analysis report?
JWY, this is the only one I've ever used. https://www.blackstone-labs dot com I don't know if they can turn around in 24hrs once sample is received. And they want 3oz of oil per engine sample. Rich
Finning should have a lab in Quebec. https://www.finning.com/en_CA/services/fluid-analysis/sos-portal.html
Blackstone is my "go to" lab, been using them for years. Engines, trans, gens, steering hyd, bow thrust hyd, stabilizer hyd. They generally have a quick turn around and will email results immediately, and we got paper hard copy for ER file folders. When we put the boat up for sale all those years of continuity of oil samples paid dividends. Just had to hand the entire notebook to the surveyors.
I don't know if you'll get a 24 hour turnaround with the shipping. See if the CAT dealer has a local CAT dealer that does their S.O.S. samples, each area generally has a lab. The one for our area is the Caterpillar dealer in Miami- Kelly tractor. If so, you could drive there and drop the samples off and CAT has always done a quick turnaround. I like to see engines, gens, gears, and coolant.
Thanks so much!! I really appreciate all of the responses! Although my standard recommendation is to have both a hull surveyor (mechanical surveyor) and an engine surveyor for engines(s) and generator(s), we are using the hull surveyor to also do the basic engine survey.
