looking at 2015 sea ray 51 sundancer with 1100 hours.has new fluids.gear oil 2 months old with 5 hours.samples came back with extremely high iron greater than 999 ppm . is this normal in pod gears with little time on oil or should i walk away and look for another boat.
Iron would be bearings then gears. Did you get an answer on the low oil pressure? This could be another sign.... Walk on. IMO; You don't want to purchase somebody else's problems.
It's sure cause for a closer inspection, and that's unlikely. I suspect when you look at the mechanical logs you'll see missed or delayed maintenance. If so you're looking at a big price reduction or a walk away.
turns put that high iron in qsm pods is acceptable as it is due to the type of oil used in these qcm drives.even readings of greater than 999ppm is common.
no got from a reputable marine repair facility in fort laud that took samples, and called oil sample tech and he confirmed these readings are common in these pods.
Good on you for checking rather than just walking away. I didn't know that as it seems several others didn't as well. Still check the maintenance logs because it sounds wrong, and this is the time to get the right (verified) answers.
