I assume Atlas is a Chris Craft Roamer, but why is her motoring down the Tennessee River significant? Where is she headed and why? Will there be pictures? Am I asking too many questions?:D

Let's see, you asked what, why, where, but you didn't ask who or how so definitely not too many.

Left Tellico Marina on Dec 31st. Lost port motor somewhere near Dayton Tenn. and have been going on Starboard one. Made it to Goose pond Marina at Scottsboro Al. searching for a counter rotation distributor or gear.

    Hi Martin,

Your original thread was soft-deleted because we thought it was a private conversation. I can re-instate if you wish, merging this newest thread with old one. Also, I reduced the size of your image from 4200 pixels to a more viewable 800 pixels. Please keep this in mind when attaching future images. They need to be reduced.

    Thanks!

Shouldn't be too hard to find a distributor gear.

No such thing as a counter rotating distributor gear,
All cams and distributors spin the same direction, Just the crank shafts spin counter.
If your hard to find a gear or old shop who works on these things (rare), look for an old Corvette distributor. Pending your needs, with or with out mechanical tach take off.

I am very rusty on this because it's been over 25 years since I messed with rebuilding gas inboards and mostly just helped my dad do them. But, I remember that some marinizers used a reverse gear on the camshaft and crankshaft (timing chain), which in turned required a backwards distributor gear, which then cause the reverse rotation motor to run backwards and the firing order was different. I want to say that Chris Craft did this on the early motors they marinized themselves.

Here is a distributor where they mention reverse rotation gears are available for a reverse rotation:

"All distributors come complete, including the brass terminal cap and rotor and stock gear. Reverse rotation gears are also available for most dual engine applications. "
GM Marine DUI – Performance Distributors

    Here's from another site:
"ou don't have to worry about the oiling, the stock setup will work in reverse. To change to reverse ("right handed") rotation, you need a reverse rotation cam, a reverse ground distributor gear, and a reverse rotation starter. The distributer drive gear (on the cam) and the distributor driven gear (on the distributor shaft) have a reverse helix, so the distributor and oil pump rotatate in the original direction.
When you index the cam, you can remark or install timing degree tape "upside down" on the harmonic balancer to facilitate timing. Of course, the plug wires have to be changed to the new firing order."

No, the cam, OIL PUMP and distrubitor spin in the same direction. Normal engines use a crank/cam chain. Counters use gear driven cams to keep the cam spinning in the correct direction and reversed the crank.
Note the lobes on the cam were set up different.
The plug wires on the cap is bass ackwards. Normal rotation; 18436572, counter 12756348
That's it, including old Chris engines.
Oh, Special timing mark plate showing advance degrees in the other direction.

You added more to your post #15. after my #16.
Let me look this up and make sure we are talking about the same issue.

Also, Sure could use the engine model number from Martin A Hart.
Some old school shops may still be around down here. Liquordale Speed O would be one of them.

"Reverse rotation gears are also available for most dual engine applications."
These would be the crank/cam gears.

The next web lead explains it also.
Just cam, gears and starter. But the cam spins in the same direction.

Maybe worded poorly with my swamp lingo, My text above is correct.

Had 327Qs in my first ever boat. That's when I learned about the Corvette distributors.
The Qs had the flywheel forward.
Dual pocket raw water pump on the end of the generator, belt driven from a pulley in the middle of the flywheel.
Manual clutch bolted to a special adapter where the timing chain/gears cover would mount.
Cast alloy oil pan with removable side covers. You could rebuild the engine in frame, with out dropping the whole oil pan.

I will get the numbers this week. You are correct the distributor does turn same direction with different firing order but the gear is a reversed cut from automotive. Mallory YL 502 A2 and YL 502 B2 is counter for starboard.
