Agreed. But they are very unlikely to require pulling so it still doesn’t explain the 140 hours labor service quote from That dealer.

Oh, I agree...from what I could see on that quote it was way too high per engine. Plus ac's and h/e's would be extra by looking at the parts. The quote for the 3406's we had from a well know Cat dealer in central Florida was over $40k for a 3000 hr service which included $8k for the h/e's being pulled and cleaned. We couldn't say "adios" fast enough.

Did you ever get the service invoice sorted out? I have to do the 5k service within the next year, looking at 25k per engine for the top end overhaul.

What did you end up doing?
It seems getting quotes is always a good idea. I know that some quotes come in well over market pricing ( usually way overestimating the hours ) because the yard is do busy they don't need the work, but if you are willing to pay more than maybe you should they are happy to get 'er done. Plus quoting hours on a job is difficult. We all know most jobs take longer than planned, yards have to be very cautious about not underestimating the labor costs, I can only imagine.

Cat dealer's and experienced independents know the cost of Cat maintenance items, anything not listed on the schedule is extra. We were doing a buyers survey. They had pumped up the price, I knew it was way high. I did not have time to get additional quotes at the time and declined the boat. Nowadays you probably need to get a few quotes, pricing can vary a lot. There are many independent Cat mechanics that can do maintenance for less than the Dealers. Cat probably requires their dealer if still under warranty.

what engines? From what I recall on the 3412Es Cat recommends a top end at 5000 but my cat specialist said if the engines are running well, no smoke not to bother.

I have the C32 A's, 1800hp. They are running fine, and may try to squeeze this fishing season out of them, but tend to follow the service protocols, so will likely do the top end by the end of the year.

So I’m back to sort out how to proceed with the 1,000 service on my C32s. Can anyone point me to mechanics on Long Island or even CT? The 38k estimate from HO Penn was ridiculous and didn’t even include replacing the aftercoolers. At this point I don’t have any extended warranty so I dont need an authorized Cat dealer as long as they are qualified.

Andy (631)335-0823. Otherwise Check with the Dockmasters in Sag , Star Is. or East Hampton Pt. Getting someone from up-island (H.O.) gets extremely expensive with travel time. If you go that route I'd recommend moving the boat over to Lighthouse Pt. in Aquabogue.
