Cat C-32 1000hour service price

    So I just got a quote from HO Penn for the 1,000hr service on my motors. The quote was $19k per engine! That seems very high. I’ve heard numbers in the mid 20’s to 30k for the service which I believe includes replacing the aftercooler cores. The boat is in Staten Island for the winter. Does anyone know of other companies that might be able to do the service at a more reasonable price? Thanks

    Try getting some details on what they are including, at that price it has to include the AC cores but even with that it seems high unless you have the old styles and additional hardware is needed. How old are the engines?

    I just sent him an email asking about the aftercoolers. I see a charge for 2 elements per engine for 668.58 Not sure if they are the cores. Here is the estimate for 0ne engine. The boat was built in 2013 as a 2014 model.

    C32 AC cores at $334 each?
    That deserves a place as an example of what "wishful thinking" means in the dictionary! :D

    So the SA at the marina thinks that this estimate doesn’t include new aftercooler cores. He’s going to confirm for me. This seems like a ludicrous price.

    No cores in there. If that’s the case i have no idea what they’re planing on doing for $14k worth of labor per engine.... that’s roughly 140 hours of work!!! 3 weeks.

    Looking at my invoice from 4 years ago, each core was $5200 plus each base $2600, each cover $2500 and tube $1142. I believe that if you have the new style (likely by 2013/2014 you will only need the cores.

    nite that $268 for the impeller is reasonable... here Pantripic charged me $537!!! 4 years ago. Only and last time I used them

    labor per after cooler was $2000

    Your labor quote is outrageous for a 1000 hour service.

    Welcome to the big apple. What were you thinking? H.O.Penn are the right guys, but you're in the wrong place. It's late, but is there any way you can get your boat down to south Jersey, up state, to Ct. or eastern L.I.? Or can you delay the service till after you leave in the spring? Right off you'll knock down the toll charge. P.S. Don't forget to add tax onto that bill. NYC and NYS.:eek:

    A few years I had 3412Es serviced by the Cat dealer at Fairhaven Shipyard, twice. Great service, reasonable, no toll or travel charges. Can’t recall the name of the Cat dealer but they were located on site.

    And watch for surprises. Pantropics added almost $1000 of freight charges for the aftercooler job I mentioned above !! Yes...$1000 and I didn’t even request any expedited shipping.

    Boats out of the water now. The engines have 950hrs and had a full service to upgrade the extended warranty in 2018. I keep the boat out East in Easthampton so I could have someone do it out there in the spring or bring it to CT. Can you give me some names of reputable people that could perform the work?

    When I looked at the labor I was dumbfounded. They have 50 hours per engine of labor for $14k total. That’s $280 per hour for labor. Can you give me a ballpark on how many hours of labor would be reasonable to perform the service including replacing the aftercoolers?

    Is Pete still running 3 mile? I've been away from there for about 7 years so don't have good info, but give them a call and I'm sure they'll give you the right guy or better still make a stop along the way at either Brewers in Glen Cove or Norwalk Cove. I think either will get rid of enough travel charges, etc. to make it pay and they're both good.

    +1 on that. Only trouble is that it's too far from his home to stay involved. Even just getting home by car and ferry is a long day.

    As mentioned earlier labor for the aftercooler replacement ran about $2000 per engine. It took two guys about two days to do both engine. The rest of the service is pretty basic, I ll try to dig out the cat service manuals tomorrow but there isn’t much to do from what I remember. Certainly not all the labor quoted!

    So new intercoolers are not included in the quote. They are telling me the aftercoolers don’t need to be replaced. They are revising the quote to remove the travel time and I’ve asked them to check the labor and give me a detailed list of what the service entails on their part

    Furnish the work done on your last 2018 service. The 1000 hr can include the 250 and 500 hr items if not already completed. Cats schedule can be confusing. Two major $$ items are the heat exchanger and the aftercoolers. Cat recommends pulling, cleaning, and pressure test the ac's at minimum. Inspect heat exchanger, clean and repair as necessary, pulling and cleaning if needed is expensive. If you are still continuing the warranty it may be necessary to have all done, if not it is your choice as what to do.
    The price sounds high without listing all work to be performed.

    There is no need to pull the HE unless something is wrong. We have 3500 hours on our 2009 C32s and haven’t pulled them out. We did an in place descale a year ago as one of them was running 192 at high cruise. That solved the issue.

    Right, but it is in the 1000hr maintenance schedule to inspect, clean and repair as necessary. We were surveying a boat several years back, had a quote to pull and clean two Cat 3406 plate heat exchangers for $800o, just saying, if they need to be pulled it is a big item. They won't tell you they need to be pulled until inspected. Actually Cat only require inspections not a automatic pull and clean like some engine mfgr's. The Cat dealer did not recommend descaling in place. We also descaled Cat plate h/e's in place on a previous boat with 3412's with out a problem.

    Do you need to seat within CAT dealership service networks to maintain the warranty? That's the issue I see here...I have a relationship with a quality mechanic nearby you, but not a certified CAT service.
