    What does this have to do with how much Vaccuum is present at the air filter? My attitude is not holier than thou, it's just that your question is THAT stupid. It measures how much restriction is at the engine air intake. Each engine/boat will have a baseline wc number depending on engine room air vent size etc., most mans run -5 or less, but unless it’s over -15, man mechanics won’t have cause for concern....... do you NEED the red line on the gauge like the rancor fuel filter gauges have???

    You're the one who made the reference. My perspective of the meaning of this thread is as people age and technology passes them by then rather than learn, they choose to condemn it. Capt J was very much on topic. You chose the topic.

    Based on the hour I wonder if NYCAP has had a NIGHTCAP or 4. That or he needs to revisit anger management at his next session with the shrink. :D

    I realize you feel an obligation to stand up for J but don't be obtuse. The others who posted in the thread had no trouble understanding that the point of the thread was to discuss the fact that motors have gotten too complicated with superfluous information from sensors that do little but increase the price and maintenance costs of motors and turn people off from buying, and most who do buy them don't have a clue what all this info means such as the OP in the cited thread.

    The ramifications of the new technology in outboards has completed changed the game in boating to the average guy on a budget. The reliability of fuel injection and the ECMs in those things is unbelievable. I am not that old but I remember the days when you had to choke/pump/choke etc an outboard. good riddance. I know this is not diesel engines we are talking about but the modern outboard is something that makes boating much easier for the average man despite the pricing.

    They’re gauges. I’d much rather see what condition my air filters (wc), fuel filters (fuel pressure), turbos (boost), all on the helm display rather than guessing. Guess you’ve forgotten when you had a performance or smoke issue pop up with mechanical engines and the dealer had to come out and hook up all of the mechanical gauges their senders and hoses and sea trial just to see what those same numbers were to diagnose the problem.

    If someone buys a boat and is too Important to spend 1-2 hours reading the owners manual on their $200,000 - 2,000,000 set of engines, I guess they can just wait until one alarms and tells them. I’m guessing these are the very same owners that never step foot in the engine room or even check their oil.

    There are a lot of things for owners to know on the old Detroit’s also, like how to reset the emergency shut down, or only to use cf-2 40 weight oil in them, or how to prime them, or critical to change the coolant every 2 years on 92 series.

    You seem to argue with everyone. Are you off your meds? Sneak out the back door of the mental hospital, or what?

    Seen the price of the Seven OBs? I don't mind flipping up a choke lever for $100K. And actually your OB analogy is right on topic. I'm not talking diesels. I'm talking all motors. They've gotten ridiculous with all the gizmos that keep the average guy from affording anything with a motor and makes it so they need an engineering degree to work on them. I've worked on boats with 50 y.o. DD. They had plenty of life left and any wrench monkey could work on them.

    I stand up for who I feel is right. The information may be superfluous to you but to many of us it's useful. Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean you should put it down. I don't want to return to the dark ages or to the days of the DD's you site as your love. I like today's engines and technology.

    Let's bring that down to a real simple level. I recently bought a tractor. Current year's model exact same as last years. Only difference was this year's was EFI, last year's carbureted. Price difference almost 40%.

    Absolutely, some of the boats you own deserve and need all the bells and whistles. You can afford it and you have an engineer. I also wouldn't want the space shuttle going up with a Model T 4 banger powering it. Trouble is it's filtered down to where it's just not needed for not much more reason than to increase the costs and profits and when a sensor keeps someone's boat on the dock or he's looking at displays that he doesn't understand without memorizing an engine manual it's reached that point.

    The subject is motors. In fact I seem to remember reading recently where it's reached that point with you and a lot of boat builders and buyers of +-90 footers also with the new regs and what has to be added. I believe it was you and/or j citing the trucking industry as you argued against the new "gizmos".

    I never argued against them. Do you use gizmos for everything you don't know? We're talking about the environmental regulations on Diesel Engines there, which are scheduled to go into effect on marine diesels. Capt J is alarmed and worried and I feel like they'll be given a little reprieve and that some manufacturers are closer than he thinks.

    So do you want to talk tractors or trucking now. Thing is on boat engines, what you consider new, I consider old. There's been very little change in the past ten years or so.
