    New owner looking for crew to take his 63' steel trawler from Jupiter to Puerto Rico in October. Yacht has Thrustmaster Z-drive and single Volvo.

    Clearly I'm not the crew but a question and a follow up question that might be important for potential crew.

    1. Doe the boat have a comfortable 1000+ nm range to allow it to make a non stop run?
    2. Assuming it does, then what size crew is the owner thinking or is he leaving that to the captain? Assuming 7 knots, that would be a 6 day run and I would think a crew of 3, although personally I'd prefer 4.

    I'm just assuming all the current restrictions will still be in place preventing what could normally be a long but easy run with reasonable stops and breaks.

    I wish you and the owner the best of luck. I just know people who have been waiting months to get boats home and am interested in anyone who is able to work out such a trip.

    Sorry Judy, can't help with your inquiry, but you made me curious, 'cause I don't think there are many 63' steel trawlers around with Thrustmaster Z-drive and VP engine, aside from those built by AFT for CH - just three of them, as I recall?

    If she's one of those, pretty sure range is a non-issue, 'cause that's the sort of boat that could reach Puerto Rico, circumnavigate it, and come back to FL without refuelling.

    Regardless, I'm not sure to see the point of asking about speed.
    It doesn't take a lot of effort to guess what sort of cruising speed a 63' steel trawler can be capable of - give or take half a knot...

    Thanks, Map, you're spot on.

    She's a Cape Horn 63 with a range of 5,000nm, draft of 6', cruise speed of 8knots. Looking for one captain plus a mate or two who can take a watch. Additionally she has bow thruster, active fin stabilizers, 3 gensets, and all the creature comforts of home.

    There may be additional information somewhere for arriving boats, but everything I've found shows that you must have a molecular Covid 19 test taken less than 72 hours before arrival with a negative result. Clearly that can't be one by boat, which seems to lead to a local test and a 14 day quarantine until negative results are received. Perhaps there's some provision to transit by going straight to airplane, but I'm not aware of it. Ports are open, although closed to recreation boating.

    Anything can be done with a considerable effort.

    This site I read says, visitors without a covid test within 72 hours have to quarantine for 14 days or until the results of a negative covid molecular test come back negative.

    I don't think you can really plan a trip like that, this far out. Each country has too many different covid restrictions, etc. The boat itself is going to have to be maintained to a T, with a lot of spare parts and tools on it and someone that is extremely knowledgable on how to repair things. With 3 you're going to have to stop every 2 nights for a good nights sleep somewhere (on anchor in calm water at the very least), it's just too exhausting to do more than that maintaining a 3hrs on, 6 hours off, or 4 hours on 8 hours off schedule.

    You have two choices, 4 crew and do the entire trip non stop. Its actually shorter to go through the Bahamas in a SE direction and about 950 NM. Roughly about 5 days straight at sea. This would still be absolutely grueling in that size boat unless it's near calm and it never is on that trip.

    Or take 3 crew total and make a few overnight stays and anchor in places like on the Bahamas bank, off of Mayaguana and maybe off of T+C, without getting off of the boat or touching land. The problem is, if there is any mechanical breakdown of any sort where you need to stop and wait for parts, it will be an absolute nightmare with customs and immigration and quarantining and getting parts through customs and everything else.

    You want the honest answer. Call Crowley and Tote and arrange for shipping it from Jacksonville to San Juan, both companies have regular ships/barges that go down to San Juan every week from Jacksonville and that would be a SURE way of getting it there in this covid climate and probably be just as cost effective. This is the avenue I'd pursue.

    Sorry, Ralph, you're getting your Cape Horns confused ;-). The CH where you're helping out is a CH55 that I have under contract but she hasn't closed - yet.

    When the Cape Horn 55 closes in a few weeks, hopefully, that will make my TWENTIETH Cape Horn sale :)

    As a follow up, we're all set. Have a captain who took a CH74 from FLL to SC and he has signed up and excited about the delivery to Puerto Rico.
