So we just purchased a 2003 36 Luhrs Convertible and I want to replace the carpeting with some new carpet. I kicked around the idea of Seadek or Plasteak, but after talking to the installers they pretty much assured me the sound deadening properties wouldn't compare to the carpeting so I think I'll stick with carpet. Can anyone recommend any deluxe/high-end marine carpet suppliers?
Unless you're doing the cockpit it's regular carpet, but you might want to get an installer with marine experience as he'll be used to all the cuts, tucks and securing methods.
+1 on the installer with marine experience. You might want to install Soundown as the underpayment to further reduce sound. Made a noticeable difference on my Ocean
Make sure you get a synthetic carpet, not wool, or cotton etc. Synthetic will stand up to the marine environment. Ask around/call around you should be able to fine someone in Miami that's done boats before. None of them will do just strictly boats, there just isn't enough boats around to carpet everyday, but some who has done a boat or two. Or high end R.V.s....boat on wheels.
You want Fabrica Nylon carpet. It's what all of the top end yacht builders use for carpet. https://www.fabrica.com/Products.aspx?fiberType=Nylon
Guys thanks for the information. This was great. We had plans to put dyna-mat down anyway, but I'll look into Soundown now. Fabrica it is!
I ended up not going with Soundown. I had it before but when we pulled it up it was falling apart. The previous owner of my boat did not take very good care of it and we found mold in the soundown. So I elected to pull it all up throughout the boat. We do a lot of commercial decking and my installer recommended a different product that is troweled down. We then put a high quality carpet pad on top of that. I don’t recall the name. My salon is quieter now but I can’t say if that is due to the underlayment or the different engines that went in. Or perhaps both.
A lot of the Euro boats use a thin rubbery matting first that is loose laid, it sort of resembles dynamat. I do not know who makes it, but their boats are VERY quiet compared to others. Then a padding, then carpet.
Thinking about Fabrica aluvial at the moment. Installer in wanchese says the builders there are using Fabrica branded higher quality padding too. https://www.fabrica.com/ProductDetails.aspx?sID=408AL&cID=776AL
Hey that looks good. Nice job. Are you going to apply a finish over it ? Varnish or poly of some sort ?
