Both of us got real sick in January just a few days after the Staniel Cay pirates party which was packed. Back then there were quite a few chinese tourists there. It was weird because we re never sick and never get the flu. Took a couple of weeks to recover with a cough that lasted a month.

I ve been wanting to do an antibody but I m weary of all these services competing and advertising all over.

but besides us, a few people we interacted with at that time, I have yet to meet someone who was sick from China-19, yet alone hospitalized or worst.

BCG rings a bell... didn’t know it could boost your immune system all these years.

Why is that? Because you disagree ? There are quite few interesting element in this thread starting with Norseman’ mention of the BCG vaccine. Quite a few articles on this out there. Interesting read...

No need to lock Ed. We're all in the same boat, just digitally distancing. ;)

So, the 124,000 deaths in the US, the 3,285 in FL, the 484,000 deaths in the world, don't matter because you didn't know any of the people? Well, we have employees who have had their families devastated by the virus and others who have lost friends to it. We worry every day about the risks our employees and we have.

Fortunately some community leaders and some governors are realizing the problems, are seeing the rising deaths in their areas, the hospitalizations, and taking remedial steps.

Here in the Philadelphia area both N.J and PA. require a mask in all stores, offices ,etc. Most things are still closed down to a degree. Out door dining only just recently started.
I service /install commercial kitchen hoods , kitchen fire systems( Ansul systems)and fire extinguishers. I'm not able to work from home and have to work $$.
I've been working , on my own, in various kitchens ,schools, churches, hotels and restaurants. Mostly I am the only person in the kitchen when I work. I always have a fresh mask on and fresh gloves. And always work with the hood ON to exhaust out any ''stuff'' in the air. So far so good.
I am also working on a new hotel site installing two hood systems, on my own...We have to get a temperature check every morning to get in. And wear a mask. We all keep our distance and I'm mostly in the kitchen area by myself. I also wash my hands often and use disinfectant spray in my vehicles....I always spray the drive up ATMs, which I use a bit for work.

I have dined out at various out door restaurants, with tables spread apart. I will not dine in doors even if they allow it.
I food shop at the store when ever I can, but keep my distance and use the ''big'' self check out lane.

I still use my boats as usual, we never have a big group or strangers on board. My travel is limited, unfortunately. I never have the time!

Of course it matters. My point was two fold. FirsT the total number of deaths while sad is not as catastrophic As we were lead to believe. If 124k deaths warrants shutting down the country, why don’t we do anything about the half million deaths from tobacco.... and don’t get me started on abortion and alcoholism

Second are the effects of the shut down especially the medical issues. How many cancers have not been diagnosed early enough to save the patients? How many other diseases and problems have not been treated? Tens of thousands... hundred of thousands? My 84 yo father has kidney stones and has been is pain for 2 months. His doctors say they can’t treat him because of China-19. Maybe in a couple of months... and I won’t even mention the psychological issues, obesity as well as domestic violence that has spiked.

many medical professionals feel that the side effects are worst than the disease

Your businesses seem to be at a level where they will survive even if it is painful. While I don’t know any person who has died from China-19, I know quite a few who had to PERMANENTLY shut down their small businesses. Their income, their dreams, Their family left shattered. Past due bills piling up, Health insurance gone, mortgages on the verge of foreclosure.... lucky you.

I was down in St Maarten mid to late January inspecting a storm damaged hull to bring back to Ft Laud for repair. Got back just as things began to hit the fan. No health after effects from the trip but now probably going to have to give up on the project, due to limited travel available, and now it seems dock express boats have cancelled going to St Maarten this year, only St Thomas.

Europe is looking to ban all US citizens from coming. The whole of Europe is now down to about 4000 cases a day, the US is running at about 25/30,000 cases a day for the same size population. It's a No Brainer.

No sure I would consider Europe has a good example of sound health policies considering their higher mortality rate and the fact they waited way too long to ban travel from red China. For instance Italy allowed daily direct flights from Wuhan to Milan for weeks after it was clear the epicenter of China-19 was Wuhan...

People keep saying it wasn't worth shutting down over 124,000 deaths, but that misses a couple of huge points. One, had we shut down quicker and more completely, we could have avoided many of those deaths. The other is that had we not taken any steps, the number wouldn't be 124,000. Instead it would likely have been 500,000 or 1 million or more. 124,000 is the death toll after the precautions and even that number is continuing to rise. Was it worth it to save 500k or 1 million lives or more?

I fully understand those who have lost businesses and jobs and feel we've done far too little for them. Similarly, we've done too little for very large businesses other than the airlines and hotels. I think the assistance provided was well intended but showed very clearly a lack of knowledge of both the ordinary worker and of the business world.

I feel it will truly be sad if we now undo the progress made and end up with the huge cost of lives and of finances.

Yet, at the same time, airports were packed with US travelers returning from Europe with no testing or tracking.

No, it's not a no brainer. Europe waited too long. Italy acted like it was just a small part of the country. Other countries acted like it was just Italy. Now once they did act, they did well.

Much of Asia and the Pacific responded much better to Covid 19 than did Europe or the Americas.

Time to run it through the herd. Those at risk , especially senior citizens can easily social distance. The virus weakens as it gets passed along, doctors learn more about treating it correctly, not jumping on the ventilator bandwagon, getting better at fighting the virus pre vaccine.

Even with the vaccine there will be mortalities and some will actually die from the vaccine as they do for any vaccine, just read the fine print. Can’t hide from what you can’t see.

What I would like to see is more technology available to track new infections and connect the dots to the source, then avoid the source. Why can’t Apple or Samsung already have this as a free app, the programming can’t cost that much? Maybe actually do some good with social media for a change, what’s holding them back?

To say Covid is becoming political may be the mother of all understatements... With that in mind, in my opinion the most reliable statistic is death (not as easy to game).

When comparing deaths adjusted for population, we (USA) are indiscernible from the EU. Looking at individual countries within EU, the USA is middle of the pack with respect to total deaths. Comparing New Deaths / 1 Week Average; Europe is .8 / million, the US 1.8/ million with the US data trending more strongly downward.

when comparing new deaths (adjusted for population), Florida’s one week average (New Deaths, 1 week average) has remained essentially flat. Splitting my time between three different cities, I also compare data at a county level which can be remarkably different that the state statistics.

Interestingly enough, the Bahamas have been virtually unscathed when compared to other countries.

See attached link to Johns Hopkins data that presents gobs of data and it easily allows for comparison while adjusting for population density. Allows selecting different data subsets for comparison.

The UK was trying to do this but Apple was unwilling to share it's Tracking feature, even for the sake of global health.

You forget Apple is a company that refuses to assist authorities in unlocking the phone of proven dead terrorists...

GCSI, yes the Bahamas are pretty much unscathed but at what costs? Their economy is dead and even with the limited reopening in July they will not recover for a year. I really hope they won’t get hit by another storm this year. The only reason they will survive is because of the international community pouring billions of dollars.

oldboater you have ignored my question. We shut down the entire economy to save 200, 300k people at tremendous cost. Again talking about the side effects not just the economics. Why don’t we save 500k a year by banning tobacco? 500k a year! There would be economical minimal impact

Pascal, when did living and breathing, clean drinking water and a roof over your head become a financial pawn to be played with? Something is not right with the system.
