Could you use your phone's compass? In those conditions an ordinary compass would be swinging all over. I've always been able to use my chartplotter's compass and chart pretty efficiently?? Coming into a rough inlet, I may use the compass bearing on my AP, but sure won't have it activated.
I think Skippy J was explaining a Murphy night, when all fails. Or a white out with no vis or anything to aim at and Murphy came calling. Without something to aim by to get you home, you could be going around in circles or one heck of a snake line and not know it. Always good to remember your girl-scout training and have a real good, old fashion compass on board. Like I said above (#13), always good to know witch way land or landing is on those dark & stormy nights.. Cell phone compass? I have a droid 8. It's compass sux. If I had to use it, it would be a snake line for sure. I would probably get a feel for CMG and not stare at a cell compass or any compass anyway.
Indeed. I've been in that situation in open waters. Pull the throttle back and trust you AP Watch the radar and plotter. You'll be in a standing position!
I try my best not to get in those Murphy traps. Quick overnight delivery and the yard manager or broker tell me it's turn key, just get her there/here, Those hairs start to tingle. Standalone laptop and GPS has brought us in a few times thru the years.
I had exactly THAT situation. Long Island, Bahamas to Turks and Caicos, was 2-4' when we left at 11am, 10 knots on a 72' Taiwanese Tub, lower station was unusable because it had no wipers and other reasons. Flybridge had only a Bimini, squal popped up at 10pm and 10-12' seas, everything quit working...….all electronics...….the compass had no light and we had 30 knot winds and rain gear but still getting soaked and a hand held gps…….I steered by the wind direction on my face (angle), not joke and the mate would hit the button on the hand held every 5 mins to see our direction. At 2 am I saw we were just west of Mayaguana and ducked behind Mayaguana on the West side and dropped the hook for the night in the LEE. Had owners wife, her girlfriend and 20 year old daughter. They woke us up at 6am to leave because the friend and daughter had flights pre-booked that left at 11am.....LOLOLOL who books flights before you even leave Fort Lauderdale, they missed their flights anyways...…....one of the worst trips of my life.
Seems we have been **** on and over come a few times my friend. Good calm logic usually prevails,,, Unless an owners party is onboard. Hate it when that happens.
Owners and owners party's can drive you crazy. We will host dockside activities with smiles and properly dress out but We will not run a boat with owners, their family or friends on board. Learned this the hard way years ago. Near left a boat in Port Canaveral one night. Burned near all his fuel to make it to it's Jax berth before the sun fell the next evening. We just make fast deliveries. Don't entertain underway nor give a ship about anything other than the safe & timely delivery of the boat. Boat service yards and brokers understand this.
I don't think Josh would mind. He may learn something about the many different types of boat captains. We may learn about small helm ergonomics. Mean time while in quarantine (yellow flag up), we'll chew some teak.
Most of the owners I work for are cool and get it. I have one group of customers that a day is like, well, starts at 12 hours. They make you almost lose your patience and not want to ever captain for owners ever again. I agree, deliveries are much much easier.

I know I am a bit late to the party, but just found this Luhrs thread and was going through the posts. Was a longtime member of the Luhrs Owner's Forum before it disappeared. Going way back to the original post, I had the same POS blue compass on my 2000 360 C. NEVER worked. I just replaced it with a my Raymarine autopilot head last summer. Worked great. Now it is very nice to have a working compass and autopilot display that is easy to read and reach in place of that worthless thing.
