    Haha, yeah. They also say that a good pilot is one who has the same number of takeoffs as landings... o_O

    If you take off, you must land. A law of nature. Therefor; Always a good pilot.
    It's the better pilot who can walk away from his last landing.

    I'm getting a chuckle from my next thought, it could be the meds I'm on;
    I can imagine some tempers and language was expressed off camera.
    If the surrounding boat crews kept throwing the bad driver back into the water (I'd sure do it), could that still be a good landing?

    It's the Miami Boat Show move in. There is a good amount of current. The best thing he could have done when he initially got into trouble was just stopped and left it in neutral and had the people on the boat and other boats fender it the best way they could! As all of the boats at the show are for sale, I'm assuming it's going to be a VERY interesting insurance claim from the other vessels as there has to be A LOT of damage and to a lot of different vessels.

    You guys are the experts and I certainly differ to all your experience, but it still looks to me as though he lost his starboard engine. Can somebody on a 63 quality SF be that bad of an operator? Maybe. I hope that someone can give us some on scene facts?

    If he lost his stb, a good driver would have know he was screwed and hand lined it anywhere.
    Or at least done this maneuver anyway else than what he did.

    Yes, I know and witnessed,, owners can not drive.

    Yes, somebody on a 63 quality SF can be that bad of an operator.
    You been by the boat ramps lately, going bigger does not make it better or less comical. SFBs

    Beau, You have a kind heart. There are hazards out in 63 and larger craft. When in doubt; C Y A,,, get far away...

    No there are 2 places in the video where he clearly has starboard engine. I'm really SURPRISED that the 63' Bertram didn't disintegrate like many of the other 63's did from that era after the forces that Captain put it through.

    I was on one boat where the owner wanted to drive, two captains on board.
    (I was the guest captain). After putting his 80 high on the bar at The New River and the ICW, he screamed at the both of us for not guiding him. I'm a guest, all knows where I was.
    I had a key to another boat at the Bihia Mar and was heading that way (back stroke).
    The wife's finally calmed him down. Something about fancy swim suites that could not get wet as he was instructing them onto the bar to push off.

    There are owners out there like this. No kidding...

    Oh I don't diminish the stupidity of trying to power out of that situation, particularly when you see the "power" he applied. Just trying to understand how an intelligent being can seemingly be so stupid? I'm not a violent guy - too old, but I think I would have thrown a bucket at the helmsman's head for his outright … if it were my boat that he hit.

    Boat Show move in...ok, not that makes a ton of sense as to the tight conditions and numerous hands with fenders on most quarters. But in that type of maneuver, you aren't trying to hit a spot. You're just getting into a zip code with dead momentum to be managed ultimately by hand. This nut is trying to power his way into the fray.

    Don't boat shows require pilots for insurance reasons? Or can any entrant with access for the boat be handled by an owner or captain of choice? Been to plenty, but never participated...??

    Boat owner is responsible for getting the boat into show location, not the show organizer. Not a good place to not know how to drive a boat.

    Thanks, and wow. I woulda thunk a pilot team would handle all of these. Reminds me of that Boatniks movie...

    Wow! Exactly , I get really mad when another boat adds more scratches to my Anchor!! LOL

    Obviously the Olde Beads of Sweat , Saucer Eyes captain at controls ….
    Had the pleasure a few years ago, while living aboard at Phila. Marine Center,to watch the owner of an 80' something green hulled Burger run the boat instead of the full time Captain . He was unable to get out of the marina entrance , which is 90 degree hard to starboard ,with little current in the end of marina right into the ships channel 3-4 knot current .
    His boat was so long the bow got out into the current, incoming, mid ships-stern still in the non-current water and pushed the Burger up against the old concrete ships pier with all of those old nasty iron bolts and such sticking out... Ugh! He went back and forth on those things , tearing up the hull real well.
    Luckily no other boats were around.

    I managed one owner operator boat for a while.
    The props were always needing repair. The owner always blamed it on his wife's driving not able to stay in the channel.
    One day, I rode with them, he was driving, then Chomp, chomp, The owner was yelling about the low water in the channel.
    I came up and pointed out that he was way out of the lake worth channel, the owner argued and pointed to the next day marker coming up on the correct side. I had to point out the past day marker not to his stern where it should be but to the after quarter +.
    The easterly breeze (not wind), was blowing his slow pace out of the channel, all he looked at was the next day marker.
    Chomp, Chomp

    I may have told this story before;
    Oh, He was also a 182 pilot.

    I may have made this comment before;
    I hate it when owners are on board..

    It would be real interesting if one could get the raw data on engines ,rudder position, throttle position ,RPM , heading and time in forward & reverse to calculate all the energy imparted into the hull. Plus the energy lines after playing demolition derby could be drawn.
