hey everyone just pulled the boat today and it’s time to get my turbos rebuilt on my 6/92s was wondering if any one had suggestions or any thoughts on this turbo blueprinting and if it is worth it please let me know
What performance do you think you have lost? What color is your exhaust? Please review Detroit turbo service specs. I can not cipher sticking but understand shaft play. Air Research, Garret and others have a good bit of for-rear play when spinning at finger pushing rpm. When running the oil offers good flotation on the shaft that is never realized (by finger feel) and center float is realized. I'm not trying to be a smart asp, but good spinning turbos should not be screwed with until a real symptom is or about to come on. Let me say it this way, Zero problems with running take off turbos to fix my customer real issues. Lots of problems with rebuilt turbos. I luv used parts. Can you take a hint??
In case you are not familiar with my maintenance schedules here on Y F, It's simple; Never kick a sleeping dawg...
The turbo stuck bad over summer to where a 7/16 socket was needed to break free and for last two seasons when spinning the turbo by hand it’s not smooth and also the shaft play is not only in and out slightly it’s up and down and can see where it made slight contact with the housing
Then you may have one bad turbo. Don't purchase a whole unit, DDC offers just the middle cartridge (your failed part). Serial number in hand, go to a real DDC shop and get just the mid cartridge.
If it's contacting the housing, the bearing is shot and you should address this ASAP before it sends pieces of the turbine through your engine. Not sure on the blueprinting of turbo's but couldn't hurt.
If you're going to send them in. Superior Turbo & injection in Detroit are real DDC rebuilders. Without the "Marine" mark-up
I pulled one and disassembled it back in October for basically the same reason. The bearings were still good and the compressor was good but the turbine housing was corroded internally to the point that the turbine couldn't spin. There were no housings available anywhere that I could find at the time but Detroit offers a complete reman for around $3,200. I deal with Williams in Birmingham,Alabama. They still had 4 on the shelf, but as soon as I get a break at my real job I'm going to replace my other one, so they'll have one less. Looks like the salt air through the exhaust took its toll on the cast iron.
By the way, if it's the TW 8301 turbo, it will have bronze bushings and you can replace them for about $150.00 if that's the problem and the shaft and housing aren't damaged.
During an overhaul we had turbos "blueprinted" by Scott Marine Power. There was a performance gain. http://www.scottmarinepower.com/techtips/2019/4/1/blue-printing
Had 2 turbos 'rebuilt' by a well know company. The single most shyte shower of a job I've ever seen. Dreadful. Just buy new aftermarket ones, like for like and cheaper.
I got mine from J & T two years ago An Un-Reliabuilt product ...but it's been good so far. Mine are small for 471. Air research units. Not sure if YF peeps know this but J & T and Western Branch are under the same ownership. Not sure who bought who. OR if it's some sort of alliance.
Ok awesome thanks everyone going to pull both turbos this weekend boats on land for the season so can take my time
