Yes, there is something going on with the relation between deck and bulwark as the undercarriage is visible when parked there...

I agree Lars. The EC-125 landed with the bukwarks up and for takeoff they were taken down. As the owner does not own a EC-125, this must be a charter bird, means commercial operation. At least they are following an SOLAS conformal SOP with the Rescue tender deployed.

May be I am a little bit biased with SY "A" and ownership from this country but this boat will always be controversial. You either like it or not but her sailing performance is not worse the design effort and money spent.

It really is hard to like A, isn't it?

Every time someone posts a pic of her, I'm reminded why I feel that way.

Kind of a queasy feeling? Unsure of your sensory and what your mind is truly putting together as an image?

Here is a good look at the 'landing area' in the beginning of this video. Clearly you can see the bulwark can separate when needed.

I made a few phone calls today in order to verify some of my informations.

Neither the owner nor the designer (artist :)) made any effort to create a certified helicopter landing pad. The whole design and building phase was purely design driven and dominated, as you would expect from this designer. Just the neccessary markings for the landing pad would have been a show stopper for certifying this foredeck area as a helicopter landing pad. From what I was told, it is not even mentioned at all in the classification paperwork. It is just a piece of horizontal ships surface, also several provisions were made to make a theoretical helicopter landing a little bit safer :p. But it must be a pretty complicated and time consuming effort to remove the bulkwark for the helo operations.

The cutout in the forward bulkwark was visible the first time SY "A" appeared out of her cover. After going under scaffolding for the second and pretty long time, the removable "filling" was added and not removed in public until now. That led me to the conclusion, that this cutout was permanently closed in order to create perfect hull lines.

I had a quite comprehensive briefing on the engine room setup and its machinery during the SMM in Hamburg but had no interest in the rest of the boat, when I was told about the specs and performance predictions of the rig and sails by other reliable sources. After having seen her sailing from close distance with my own eyes off the shores of the Balearics, I doub those figures even more.

The rig is suppost to propell the boat to 22 Kts and the max. allowable wind is suppost to cause a maximum of 12 degrees of heel. The rig and sails are suppost to withstand a wind force of 90 Kts! The last figure I could almost believe, as this hull is cross runner. Or as we sailors say, when sailing, the boat produces more wake leewards than on its stern.

They yard had several disputes with the ownership during the build and after delivery (remember the chaining of SY"A" at Gibrlatar). The boats stability and its riding moment was not according to the spec. SY "A" had to be re ballasted and additional ballast had to added and during the recalculation of the stability some calculating errors were made. The disputes are still going on. The word was, that some engineers really felt relieved, when SY "A" finally left the baltic sea.

But I will break a lance for SY "A" and its ingenious designer. SY "A" is a milestone in megayacht design and a real eye opener wherever she appears. If your eyes can accept her lines and design features, You will find her look dramatic and You will like her. The best megayacht in the world to show of. Therefore for its owner and designer, mission accomplished. Her rig and sail arrangement is breathtaking (also her banana masts were caused by the upward pointing furling booms, which were asked for by the slooping hull lines). I am absolutely sure that this rig would perform great on a different hull, specially designed for sailing. This carbon rig is built on the absolute edge of todays technology. The only other possible types of rig and sail in this size would be either a Dyna Rig or a reefable Wing Sail design (jet to come in this gigantic size).

So far for SY "A" and its designer in my humble personal opinion.

Landing a helicopter on a "real" sail boat is a very difficult undertaking. Even if the boom can be swung away, there is still some rigging left. Aft stay(s), back stays (on a sketch), running back stays on a sloop. Loosening of the aft stays on my boat would make the mast fall forward like chopping a tree. We (not me) have done some slung load supply deliveries with the Helo on my sail boat but only with a long liner delivery. Means a line secured on the helicopters hook, long enough, that the helo could hover above the the mast with some additional safety height above the top of the mast. In our case a 270 ft line. And can assure You, flying a long liner is only a job for real professionals, both in the cockpit and on the boat. The removable electric winch of the helicopter has only about 100 ft of rope. We are looking forward to the helo ops with the (AC)H-145, as this bird can lift more than 2.200 lbs externally.

Nice photos! These pictures show the taint on the mast due to the smoke of the exhausts really well. You can clearly see that it is darker there.

If I remember correctly here was a lot of discussion about the exhaust stacks at the time

Yes, remember the exhaust was vertical and that really dirtied the mast. Not sure if adding the bent pieces were an afterthought reacting to how sooty the original setup would make the base of the mast or if it was always intended to be bent away as it is currently.

Have you tried using different browsers and restarting your computer? Can you see the pics on different hardware like a cell phone or a tablet? If so please give some details about the hardware that is having the problem.
