I'm sure anyone on Facebook/Instagram has seen the #10yearchallenge.

This article was published in a local paper yesterday: https://www.ledevoir.com/societe/545648/le-defi-10-ans-de-facebook

I'll do a rough translation for those that don't read French.

The Wired article by Kate O'Neill referenced above can be found here: https://www.wired.com/story/facebook-10-year-meme-challenge/

When in doubt; Don't do it.
Nobody has to read long agreements and disclaimers.
Nobody has to read long stories what's happening to FB.
Nobody has to worry about the last picture on FB.
    No data tracking from FB.
There is nothing on FB worth the effort of logging on or risking anything.

    Come home safe and simple.

Friends don't let friends do FB..

Ok, FB is a free site - open to anyone - so you can expect your property is now their property. I always had watermarks on my photos to prevent them from being used without payment. Had they charged $12/yr for their services they would still have access to your intellectual property. Motley Fool had a free forum, but then decided the hosting was costing them, so they went with paid subs - about 60% of their free contributors ditched them. I paid and stayed until two years ago when my photos were stolen - even with a watermark dead center.

That is exactly why we don't want to be in any string with anyone with K or Y or any of the mass sites OR with anyone who uses FB etc...Big data tracks all of it, and it is in NSA computers as we speak connecting us with everyone else who might be under surveillance of any kind. As govt is increasingly broke, enemies of the state are being identified. FB knows all about us even if we have never been on the site.

Big Data is watching all....and guess who knowingly allowed all this to happen? Always thought this was a really dangerous idea.

PRISM started right after the attack on NYC. Reathorised under zero and continuing under MAGA.

What's chilling about Facebook is their utter lack of customer support. My account was hacked -- some fraudster posted a video in my name -- and changed my password. I saw that some entity in another state had "logged onto" my account. I tried to find some way to contact Facebook --but there are ZERO telephone contact numbers and ZERO direct customer support email addresses. I had no luck at all trying to talk to a human being or even send a message to someone at Facebook. The company may as well be run by zombie aliens -- they avoid direct contact with Facebook users at all costs. I was eventually able to reset the password but I am leaning toward deleting my account even though it affords me enjoyable news of family and friends.

Actually under the help button there are two things to help you in that situation. First, you can indicate the issue and you can get instructions on resetting passwords and other. Second, at the bottom of the drop down menu is "Report a Problem" which allows you to report that you were hacked. This is directly to support and replies will show up in your support inbox.

Someone put up a Facebook page on behalf of YF (unbeknownst to me). It was a pretty lame page that in no way represented us. I contacted Facebook and requested the page be removed and asked them to supply me with posters identity, to no avail. I later learned at a webmaster's conference that others had encountered a similar situation. Some of us concluded that FB was putting up these pages to force companies to join Facebook and control the information being posted about them. I later put up a FaceBook page for YF and JF so someone else couldn't do the same, which is apparently the outcome FB was seeking. Tactics like this are criminal in nature.

Part of the problem resetting a password is that you have to type in the "old" password before they will allow you to change the password. Since my account was hacked and the password was changed by the hacker, Facebook kept rejecting the "old" password I typed in. I finally resorted to hitting the "forgot password" link and reset my password from there.

The "Report a problem" area did not seem to have a space or direct link to say my account was hacked. Maybe I misread the stuff. I tried to report it but so far I have had zero response from Facebook. As far as I am concerned, the company should be renamed "Faceless."

I stand corrected -- I did receive a message from Facebook when I reported my account was hacked and the password had been changed. I asked for help to resolve the problem and Facebook replied: " Your feedback will be used to improve Facebook. Thanks for taking the time to make a report."
You can't get more personal or helpful than that.

I got off Facebook after having a private messaging conversation wth my brother on places to visit in Israel, and being bombarded with travel ads for Israel the next day.

The writer was on the radio this morning talking about how she spent six weeks off social media. FB has 120,000 isp's, Amazon has 20,000,000 and MS has about the same. Only way to protect yourself is having a private VPN installed on your phone, pad and/or home computer.

And, never use free wifi that doesn't have a password and never use the airport charging stations.

This is a fairly common knowledge in developers circles (I'm one foot in). There's an amazing piece of regulation called GDPR, which is surprisingly competent in banning all of these shenanigans, but as it's worded to only apply to European citizens, a lot of US-based developers choose to skim it.
