The official number should be stamped on any wood component like a door or drawer or other prefabricated piece.
Can anybody tell me if the decorative rail with the circle pattern is unique to this vessel or was that a common detail? If it is relatively unique, I think it is safe to say we have found a vintage picture of her. One of the pictures I found of her docked shows that exact rail detail. You can see the decorative rail detail in the above 2 pictures. The flag logo on the stacks is identical as well between pictures in posts 342 & 360. Does the flag decal denote any notable ownership? Using the measuring tool and Google earth aerial view, she measured 98' LOA.
I will look next time I am down, still some wood stuff lying around that has not been burned and the bow is still intact. Its a long shot.
Sea Eric is more knowledgeable about these than I but I have never seen another Trumpy with the circular trim you speak of. This particular boat is older than any I've seen still in service, I think.
I'm pretty sure that "circular trim" is actually a retrofitted stiffening beam of some sort. The round cutout holes were intended to lighten it without diminishing its tensile strength. Maybe the vessel had become distressingly limber longitudinally, and this beam was fitted to address that. I have never seen anything like this on any other vessel much less on a Mathis-Trumpy. It was definitely a retrofit. So it and the cross flags/burgee feature on the stack definitively identifies this vessel as the same one I posted above in this thread. Now, considering the crossed burgee feature on the stack, that should identify the owner. One burgee is the private signal of the owner and the other is his home yacht club. To research this, I will pore through the flag/burgee section of my editions of "Lloyd's Register of American Yachts".
I have growing confidence that this is indeed the Luneta. I found a captains website https://scottcparker.com/capt.html where he claims he was captain of the Paradise II in 1988 in FL and the picture matches up. Paradise II was reportedly one of the later registered names of Luneta. I can't find much in the way of previous ownership records other than this. I may contact Cpt. Parker if his info is still valid and see if he can provide any additional insite.
Looks like it was indeed Luneta. But at some point she must have had the stern modified as well as being lengthened from 98' to 103'.
Anyone know which Trumpy was once used as Maryland Governor's yacht--at the time called Maryland Lady? And if so any photos? Eastwind
Maryland Lady was a 118' Defoe that was retired in about 1979 due to her poor condition. The only Trumpy I know of that was a Maryland governor's yacht was "Aurora" a 58' Trumpy 1971 houseboat. The powers that be used her as a part trade + cash for the godawful "Maryland Independence" yacht that had been a former minesweeper. A bad deal for the Md taxpayers IMHO.
She was one of several Defoe Cruisemaster series yachts , the design being developed before WWII as the "Blue Boat" project.
Thanks all: I knew the Trumpy, Aurora was the one I was on when Harry Hughes was Governor---but which Aurora?? And who has photos of her? I agree on the Maryland Lady (shown above) and yes the state yacht was called Maryland Independence - she was an ex Canadian sub chaser, big, but not very classy. Gov. Ehrlich--a sort of do-nothing Gov. sold her on Ebay in 2003--last of the Maryland State yachts.
I’m restoring her.... She has been on the rail in Darien, Ga for 2 years. Please feel free to contact me.
Hello. I just joined the forum because I found it while looking up something else. I'm digging up this old thread because it piqued my interest for two reasons. 1. I was Sen. Glenn's mate on SENIRAM II, the '66 Pacemaker, at Chesapeake Harbor. 2. While there, I also did day work and occasional cruises as mate on the 85' Mathis Trumpy, ENTICER for Capt. Rick a couple of summers. A quick history lesson: the senator had 5 yachts, all were named SENIRAM II. Why? Because he had a partner in all of them, Gen. Tom Miller, USMC, Ret. Gen. Miller was his business partner in the boats and ran the day to day operations. SENIRAM II actually meant "2 bassackwards Marines" The Pacemaker is now cruising under the loving care of Capt. Kevin and Maria Brown in Tampa under the name CRUISING AT LAST. Here's the boss with my youngest daughter on a day trip on the bay. ENTICER headed out of Chesapeake Harbor from bow of SENIRAM I At the time, ENTICER was owned by the Maritime Museum in Philly. She had Detroit 671s that were installed in 1939, 3 years after her build, replacing the original steamers. I was told she sank at the dock in '39 although I've never seen anything in print about it. She has since been repowered with John Deere's One more note, I saw here that TIRELESS sunk in Florida. I was aquainted with her owners while she summered on the Sassafras River around 2004-5? Hate to see her lost.
I did not see the captain on this baby but the pictures don't do her justice. Someone is taking good care of her. The aggravation of varnishing the hand/ladder on the stren along would make me nuts.
