Pricing out the rebuild on my broken valve motor. One mechanic mentioned needing a special head for that motor with special valves so it doesn't come apart again...anyone heard of this? Also, when the valve broke, does it wipe out the exhaust side of the turbo?
Say what?? Walk away from him. Those valve parts have to fly somewhere. Usually down wind,,, to the turbo.. NOBODY is going to give you a quote until the head, piston, liners and turbo are inspected. It takes billable hours to get that far. We only offer estimates pending inspections. We never quote. Nobody can. You need to find a reputable DD shop and let them have it. Then smile when your signing the checkbook.
Thank you...got another estimate for 12k plus the possibility of the head not being able to be used for a core and turbo wiped out..j6 valves included...also extra is raising the motor if pan can't be dropped...
Could be just me but that seems to low. And I highly doubt that they can get under that motor without raising it.
It seems low to me as well. If you're going to major a 671 TI, you do it all.....clean all of the coolers, rebuild the turbo, rebuilt injectors and on and on and on......
It s a bit low but it depends on what s included or not. Raising the engine will add a couple of days of work, if not more... The key isn't just the price but the quality and reputation of the mechanic.
$2,000 per cylinder - seems low for a complete rebuild. Try and get a good understanding of what the mechanic considers a complete rebuild in writing, then make sure to include all the other components mentioned above to do the job right. Is it an A thru Z approach or are they only taking you to 'S' and then will walk you up as it becomes apparent that you need to do a "complete" overhaul? Injectors - use a service that can flow test them on a bench. You will find that quality varies and you may need to physically go through more than 6 to get 6 good ones.
Chances are you just need a tip on one injector. Find an old school shop that will fix, pop and match what you have. I have a shop in Jax, His brother is in Orlando if you cant find a shop on the left side of the state.
Remember what I said in the other thread. You need to pull the head on the other engine and have the valves properly inspected. Hell, once the head is off just have it rebuilt and be safe. I'm speaking from first hand experience.
That's one injector that needs rework. Find a shop that can fix injectors and have all pop'd to match. Later 71 heads (4 valve) really need to be looked over very well. For me, I'd get a new head. Maybe a new rod with the piston/liner kit. New chunk for the turbo also. How does the other lungs look? I don't see any cross hatch pattern on this liner. I recall you commented the engine lost a great deal of oil. Large amounts of oil is shot up under to piston to help cool it. In your case, sucked rite thru that hole and out the exhaust.
If you're going to drop the pan to do liners, you might as well do everything. You're taking the rods off anyways to pull the pistons out, might as well do main bearings and the oil pump while you're there, that's about all that's left.
