Man CR900 how would rubber chunks get into my oil cooler

    Had the engine oil cooler removed to have the gasket replaced because of a slight oil leak. When they removed the oil cooler they found chunks of rubber inside that appear to have been a broken up round rubber gasket. Any idea how this would have traveled to the oil cooler and what it maybe. No other oil leaks.

    Round rubber gasket like an O-ring, or like a flat gasket? Was it on the water side or oil side?

    It looked like it was more a round flatter gasket possibly tapered. Not like an o-ring. Going to have to confirm today but pretty sure it was the water side.

    It might be the gasket on the end of the heat exchanger......do not quote me on this as I'm not that familiar with the insides of MAN's but I believe they have a rubber isolater gasket on each sides of the heat exchanger and that's how they get away without using any zincs in the raw water cooling system......

    I kind of think it might have been the thermostats that we replaced two years ago. Two of the three a portion of the rubber was missing and chewed up.

    Is the cooler raw water cooled?

    If so, sounds like pieces of the raw water pump impeller to me.

    What's the raw water flow? If the oil cooler is before the heat exchanger, chances are you find impeller pieces a lazy mechanic (or captain) didn't bother looking for
