I own BOATPIX. A friend alerted me to this topic and I told him this is like that song "Video Killed the Radio Star" and BOATPIX is the Radio Star. Drones are the Video Star. Or the beeper salesman. Anyone have some advice for me?

Hi BOATPIX, Welcome to YachtForums! I met you one morning in FLL. You were riding your bike on Royal Palm Drive and I was getting ready to show a boat. Small world. I have had you photograph several of my personal yachts over the years and was quite happy with your work and price point. For me, the economies of scale would suggest that there is still a market for your services. But, I'm an old guy of almost 60 and the learning curve on professional drone photography suggests that it's better left to the pro's. Do you do video as well as still photography? I'd love to have a clever video promo piece done for my yacht brokerage in the hopes that it has potential of going "viral" on the net. IMHO You can always compete when you're the best at what you do.

Get your banner on to some drones - has to be way cheaper then those noisy choppers that scare the liquids out of you when they fly up behind your boat!

I personally still believe that drones and boat pix are intrusive enterprises.

I personally still believe in Beau and what he believes. Just so he doesn't feel like he's the only one.

As long as the FAA has deemed drone operation from a moving object as illegal, you have job security.

It's often enterprise that makes it intrusive. For recreational pursuits, drones are extraordinary tools, taking film making to a higher level (pun intended). Check out this video from the New York Drone Film Festival...

If you want to collect them while they intrude, maybe you can invest in these things.

I'm surprised with all the anti-drone sentiment here... Makes me jealous knowing there is rarely anything going on on my boat that I'd rather hide. LOL

Got my Mavic Pro last week. Getting it ready to fly and looking forward to shooting some video.

Coastlines, off shore islands, dolphins in open water, and if things go well I am hoping to film the Cortes bank one day.

I spent a lot of time on drone forums the past few months doing my DD, and the invasion of privacy thing is generally overblown anecdotes. Not saying it can't happen, but in general a person who will spend the money and then take the time to learn how to fly one is not exactly the peeping Tom creeper type who Is looking in people's windows. The folks I connected with are tech saavy, and mostly shoot nature.

I have a P3A and and contemplating getting a Mavic or waiting for the next one to come out. It's a nice drone but the market is changing a lot.

That said, a tremendous amount of people will dislike you. It's silly really. Unless you have a $10k+ drone fitted with a DSLR, you can't do anything except get some great big picture footage. I do feel that people with the Mavic have it a little better. Since it is so small, you don't have to have this huge bag and controller when you go out to shoot. You just can whip it out, take off, and not many are the wiser.

I played around with a mavic pro during our last trip to the exumas last months and it opens incredible new possibilities in photo and video.

Like everything it s all about common sense and respect of others. We don't hover near or fly above other boats, and don't take pictures of others. It's not much different from passing close to another boat and taking pictures from your flybridge.

The resolution and stabilization is just incredible. The original images and clips are incredibly sharp. It takes a little while to learn how to coordinate the controls to get smooth rotating footage although the newer drones have automatic follow me modes that work pretty well.

MAny Marinas have added no drones to their rules. When I took the picture above (staniel) I made sure to fly the drone straight out of our swim platform and not over or close to the other boats. Again, common sense and respect

Having video of charter customers on the water bikes and so forth to memorialize their stay with you would be like icing on the cake for them.

    Tubing video, in a Staniel

Can’t get that footage from a dinghy. Guests love getting a memory stick at the end with all the pics and footage. They get a perspective you can get any other way. That last batch was shot with a Parrot Anafi

Here (I think!) is a short video I shot over in Marshall, Liberia of our 41 express at her new home. I used a Mavic Pro and I'm still learning so please go easy on me! They are raw and unedited and nowhere near as professional looking as the ones others have posted, sorry!
