With all the crazing on my Cabo 43 I decided to have it painted from the rubrail up. Ran it down from Ponce to Palm Bch last Monday and the painting process has begun. They started tenting it on Tues. and removing or covering all the metal, etc. Removed outriggers, bow rail, ladder, etc. Already have started the sanding. What a job. Guess that's why its so expensive.
Ship Will probably have to do my Post because of similar crazing. What was the quote for yours? if I may ask
Beau, Right at 45k which included the 6.5k for the tent they build to enclose the boat. Definitely not cheap but for all the work involved I can understand the cost and believe it to be fair. Skip
Thx Skip Sounds reasonable to me also, based on other quotes I've researched. Good luck with the out come.
Beau, Does your Post fall into the years with the bad gelcoat? I know Post had to paint boats to fix the gelcoat issues and also had some owners suing to get their boats fixed. Post sued the gelcoat manufacture but lost in court along with Viking. Between court costs and having to repair and paint boats was one of the major factors in the Post demise.
Thankfully not as bad as other, but yes it does. Though they adamantly denied it. I was preparing to sue until they went belly up. I had a big row with the CEO. I'm over it now. I was quoted $200K to remove and replace the gelcoat Beau
I would have the entire boat painted, ask your painter but it should be very cheap to do the hull in comparison to the rubrail up if they're already doing the topsides, less than $10k I would guess as there is little prep work compared to the rubrail up, then you don't have to wax the boat and the entire boat will look new. Usually the hull is $300-350 a linear foot if you're just doing the hull, but I would guess your painter would probably give you a heck of a deal if already doing the topsides. I like Awlcraft on the hull and traditional Awlgrip from the rubrail up. Awlgrip is a bit harder than Awlcraft but not as easily repaired, but the chances of needing a repair on a boat like yours from the rubrail up is small. Make sure to use only the Awlwash soap on the boat after it's painted and Awlcare once in a while or to get out stains or streaking. Read Awlgrip.com and click on technical information and then care and tips or something along those lines, but DO NOT wax it or use an ammonia based soap such as Orpine.
Capt J, I did ask the painter about painting the hull and he did not recommend it. He said your hull is in great condition and if me I wouldn't paint it. They are using Awlcraft on the topside. Thanks I have read all the info and will only use their products to wash and polish. Thanks, Skip
Your probably right although don't plan on selling anytime in the next 10 yrs as that's why I had it painted. Currently owned it since 08. It will be my last boat.
Update 1/2 way through or more on paint job for topside. They just primed it last week. Amazing process. Built a tent completely around and over boat. They send me pictures weekly and I've been down their a couple of times.
Here's an update. Went down to the boat on Monday 11/10 and boat is fully painted from rubrail up. Looks fantastic. They were still removing the paper and tape. Now they are painting the transom same color and putting a couple of coats of clear coat on it. Okay, getting ready to leave the painter asks me before he removes the tent have I changed my mind to have the hull painted. I said no you said it was in great shape. He agreed and then said if you want to paint the hull I will give you a great price. He did and now I'm having the hull painted same color this week. This company has been fantastic and the owner really likes to please his customers. No surprises. He did some fiberglass work on the boat in several places that was uncovered once they ground the gelcoat down. All no charge. Now he's started painting a 106 footer next door in the other marina. Now that's a tent.
Here's a few more pictures and will post more as finished. Boat will be completely painted by next Friday Nov 23rd.
Yes that is a tent a **** huge one. Glad I'm not paying that bill oh let me rephrase that I couldn't pay that bill.
