As this yacht has already garnered quite a bit of attention, I thought she deserved her own thread. Her first mast was stepped yesterday.

My German is terrible, but doesn't the article call it "White Pearl"? Is this associated with M/Y "A"

Yes, same owners. It's been revealed that she will be called S/Y A.

I wonder it the owner is going to sell his 119m motor yacht or if he keeps both.

Well the pure motoryacht isn't for sale as yet that we know about. Usually if you are selling, it (the listing) would be in the public or at least be known about to some degree. So at this point perhaps, they are going to have two.

Well, the visibility from the bridge seems very poor - dangerous even.

Between cameras, radar, pop-out wing stations, watch-standers and escort vessels I doubt that will be too much of an issue. Then there's always the old fall back "Sailboats have right of way";).

Is that a large pool between the fore and middle masts?

If so it looks like the owner has gone for even more extreme privacy than he did on the M/Y.

There was a even better aerial picture on (removed). It won't let me post the link but if you go on there under This yacht you will see it.

As Hohum says, that really is an anti Paparazzi deck layout. A lot of open air deck spaces not visible from sea level, only from the air. And I bet, their will be some laser guns (sorry, pointer of course :)) waiting for areal drones. And far morepowerful ones than I have encountered in Palma.

    Foredeck.jpg

It would be interesting to see the water removal facilities (scuppers) on these lower forward decks, as required by class. When taking over water at heavy seas or during heavy rain, this atrium will otherwise fill up rather quickly. Several features reappear on the SY "A" that can already be seen on the powerboat "A". Like for example the the lifting covers of the aft mooring deck areas. The minimum visibility from the wheelhouse is for sure according to the rules but does not look very luxurious, friendly spoken.

The rig still does look like a type of Dynarig to me. The free standing masts seem to be turnable, otherwise the radar mast would not make any sense. The stepped atriums at each mast base will give the freedom of movement for strong and low positioned boomvangs, which are supporting large booms without (!!!!) mainsheets. In mast furling of pretty large triangular airfoil shaped sails (reason for the banana shaped masts ?). I would call this type of rig(g) an asymmetrical dynarig compared to the symmetrical square rigger DR of Maltese Falcon. I am sure this rig will work (and hopefully last). The Dykstra boys normally know their business. But their will be some fearsome figures of airload on this rig and its mast bearings and those sails have a lot of counterproductive and off-kilter shaped metal to propel.

A very interesting project which I luckily do not have to like but a real milestone in Superyacht design. I hope it will not share the hard fate of the Swedish galeone Vasa, which capsized and sunk on its maiden journey 1628 after travelling less than a mile :).

I am looking forward to the sailing performance of this giant and how it will leave the Baltic Sea with its enormous airdraft.

It is probably handled the same way we did with the "hatchless" containerships ... great big bilge pumps that automatically pumped the sumps. Scary idea but one you saw it in action with green water coming over the side it wasn't all that bad. No idea how the shippers liked it though since it made all the cargo "deck cargo."
