My Starboard engine startsup fine under shorepower, after that it gives me trouble "Hard to Start" I changed the battery, same results and the Starter is fine. Any suggestions.
What engine? What voltage are you seeing with shorepower connected and not connected? What do you mean you changed "the battery" Your boat should have several batteries and it's best to change them all at the same time.
Carver with SBCs. Please define hard to start.. Notable slower turning over. Starter rattles? Spins the same but does not light up? Quick issue off of the dock or a time later? What does the volt meter do when it starts correctly and in-correctly. ESP sux over the web these days, Ya got to give us something...
Started fine hooked up to shorepower. 5 min. ride to get a pumpout and gas. when restarting only the Starboard engine does not turnover, I thought it was flooded. Starter is fine keeps cranking trying to start. Did not look at the volt meter. After several attempts it finally starts. Second time this occured, Changed both engine batteries after the first occcurance.
Please try this again; when restarting only the Starboard engine does not turnover OR; Starter is fine keeps cranking trying to start
He stated, keeps cranking. The issue has nothing to do with shorepower, I don't think. It sounds like once the engine is warm it will not start, just keeps cranking. You either have a fuel related issue called vapor lock. Or something electrical on the motor has an issue and heat causes it to not work, such as a coil or something maybe. Have a marine mechanic look at it.
That really sounds like drained batteries. Do they both charge off one motor? I suspect a bad alternator or something along the line from there to the batteries. On the shore power you're getting charged. Once off you're only draining. Watch that votmeter as you crank (off shore power), and as you run. I suspect you'll see them not charging adiquately as you run and draining them when you crank.
Well; J reads it turns over and not starts. Not sure why the batteries were replaced if it's cranking. Cap reads don't turn over. That I thought on first post. It was a confusing paragraph (#5) that I was hoping one line or the other was phrased incorrectly. Stated he thought it was flooded that helps me think it was turning over but not starting. Q-Jets leaking down could be an issue. Ballast resistor. Old coil. If it's not turning over with fresh batteries, could be a line of things without some more info. On a 11 year old gas boat, maybe electric problems, subject to sparks, he thought it was flooded,,, It will be a non-issue shortly..
Initially and secondly he went straight to the batteries. Totally different sound than a fuel problem, but could be confused with it during a crank when the battery is almost charged enough after only draining during one start and a " 5 min. ride ". Could also recover enough juice after sitting a minute to crank enough for a start. He could be getting no charge at all or even a partial charge. He needs to check the output at the alternator, and at the terminals.
New batteries will be able to start an engine multiple time without any charge. I'm in the camp that it is more fuel system related, keying off the thought it is flooded. Second, it is time to call a mechanic.
Thanks to everyone who responded. I need to replace the 10amp charger that is no longer charging the system.
10amps for the entire boat? That's way to small. You're going to want AT LEAST 10amps per bank, if not more.
I don't understand. If the charger isn't working you shouldn't be able to start after being on shore power, but you should be charging while running. That's the opposite of what you described.
