    Hello;
    Does anybody know what size packing to use for a 1991 4207. I was thinking of gore packing with grease. Any suggestions for me?

    Thanks

    Don't know about th size but goretex is th way to go although it doesn't take any grease making instal a lot easier than conventional packing with grease.

    No grease, you should be able to figure the size out by measuring the space between the but or collar and the shaft. Goretex is the best way to go.

    ABSOLUTELY NO GREASE! and do a decent job of wiping out what may be there. Grab a hand full of drill bits and use them to measure the space available for the packing. Lay a bit along the shaft and find the bit that just fits - that bit size is your measurement. DO NOT buy WMs junk packing (well, at least it was junk last I looked) Only use genuine Goretex. Someone here I hope will give you the correct name and seller. As to NO GREASE I got that straight from GoreTex.

    Really need to know your shaft size. There is a scale in use for most glands / shafts.

    We use allot of PTFE Flax packing from west marine. No problems after many years on many of our customers boats.
    They also sell the Gore stuff that we have never used. One day maybe I'll risk a job and try it,,, Maybe....

    We try to stick to stuff that works and not change from it.

    The PTFE from West Marine is pretty good stuff. I use it on rudders and stuff.... but let me tell you something, NOTHING comes close to Goretex for shafts. The stuff is amazing. I put 5300NM on it once and only had to just barely tighten the stuffing box 1 time in the entire trip......

    In fair comment, I have no time/distance data to compare with. Skippy Js environment and customers would have much more use than our customers. Maybe one day sooner ,, we will give dat G stuff a try.
    Thx,

    It's great stuff and needs practically no drip. It's very worthwhile to try it on a boat that sees a good amount of use. You won't be disappointed. I use it on shafts, and the West ptfe stuff on rudders etc.

    Before I first used Gore's product I chased down their company rep in St. Louis and asked my questions. He said the only problem that he was aware of was that old timers on Mississippi tugs were appyling grease during install. I don't recall why that was a problem, probably leaks. But I have followed his advice several times on several boats with great results.
