    Azzam on anker

This picture was made obviously in the German Bay, most likely in the vicinity of the island of Helgoland. If you continue in this picture list, you will find some more great pics of Azzam from the same photographer and on one of the pictures, you can even see the island. It is the favorite test area of Lürssen.

And it must be some kind of test or a type of ankering with maximum care for the undwater paint in the bow area (as you can see, there is no current indicated by the angle of the chain). Azzam is positioned perpendicular to the apparent wind, for which she must be using her dynamic positioning system, to keep the chain away from the hull. Which could also mean, a yard crew is still handling the ship and is trying to keep her in as new condition.

That sounds to me, also Azzam is delivered to the owner since Oct. 2013, the yard is still taking care of her, crewing her and is doing regular test runs into the German bay, to keep her operational .

    Spotting day

Could not resist to go to other side of the Weser River, when taking picture of Quantum Blue and have one more look at Azzam at Lürssen Aumund.

She carries the flag of her owner, is perfectly cleaned and polished, all exhaust covers removed and this time, really looks ready to go.

The consistent rumours in the ocal towns are now saying, the owner lost interest and wants her to be sold. Given the fact, that none of this is confirmed, nobody seems to be alarmed anymore, as there is supposed to be no liability or remaining costs on the yards side.

Not bad, loosing interest on an 540.000.000,- Euro investment and do not have to care about it. The problem I would see, besides her pricetag, the external and internal layout and her internal design will make it nearly impossible to sell her to an none middle east customer.

Anyhow, what a beautiful ship. A design and technical masterpiece. What a giant!

When leaving, I saw this nice vintage Colin Archer sailboat upbound the Weser river. Those guys must have had a nice weekend on the North Sea.

    10 cents.
As always: Please include a sister ship so that I can afford to own and maintain the first one. Then also include a second sister ship so that I can afford to actually do something with the first one. ;)
Only ...slightly beyond my means. Even after including the totally insane overdraft limit.

A bit more realistic: A large and from what is publicly available very much custom ship. Not a yacht in the generic sense. Finding a buyer won't be simple.

In other news: Google says 1h27 to Lüerssen Werft. Or ~1h40 to the photo spot. Hmmmm.....

It is not that bad for a nice and pleasant sunday tour. Especially if you go by motorbike :D.

If you look at this official advertising picture of Azzam from Lürssen, you will indeed see some external features, which would make her very difficult to be sold to an buyer from other areas than the Middle East.

Almost no outside deck area (which is typical for yachts for those clients) for sun bathing, no pools or hot tubes on the outside and most of all, the second owner deck between the main deck and the bridge deck is a no walk around area (means, not accessible and viewable to the crew during normal operation). A typical design element for the so called "Ladies Deck". And the reason for those retractable emergency stairs in the forward and the rear of this deck.

The Interior styling could be changed ($$$$) but the exterior would be much more difficult. The none walking part of that deck for example is most likely used for ducting and other technical spaces.

This picture was made during her helicopter landing trails. If you look at the foredeck, you can see the Lürssen fire guard personel hiding on the lower service deck with full gear and ready to go. It really shows the painstaking safety measurements and quality assurance of this yard.

IMO, no picture or video (even in HD) will show the beauty and appearance of this giant yacht, unless you have seen her in reality.

For me, the fuel bill for 265.000 US Gal of Diesel at 7 US $ per Gal after just a weekend run, would be rather prohibitive :p.

In January this year, the owner suffered a stroke, not the first one, and his health remains weak and has almost dispeared from public view. That must be part of the story.

Felipe, your post has been confirmed by official diplomatic sources. That information will answer a lot of questions and will end most rumours.

This should end most speculations for a while, why Azzam is still at Lürssen and I for my part, for piety reasons, will concentrate on this beautiful ship in further posts. I should have known earlier but Royalty and Leaders from that area a normally not on my radar.

Thanks again Felipe for your post.

Peter Lürssen just revealed in an interview that there was an hold up with "Azzam" due to the berthing facilities in the UAE. This issues seem to be solved as she is about to leave Germany within this month. Also the propulsion package is running smoothly according to the yard CEO. Finally!

Well, I guess this is what you have to put up with when you have a 180m yacht.

So was it that a new berth had to be constructed or just like retrofitting one up to superyacht standards?

Sure most of what would be the outside deck space is glassed in, but it has so much room everywhere that there is still an abundance leftover. 2200m^2 of deck on that vessel, more than enough to get some sunbathing in.

So she is just going to Gibraltar to fuel and go back to Europe or is she crossing to the Caribbean?

...or the Seychelles, where she will spend most of her time.
