I have a 1989 Carver 4207. The port fuel tank has a leak and needs to be replaced. The fuel tanks sits between the port engine and the hull. Has anyone replace a fuel tank and can give me any suggestion?

They make bladders that can be inserted into the fuel tank so the tank doesn't have to be replaced. I have never used one however. Sounds as though you may have to pull the engine to do the exchange.

How did you eventually solve the problem?

This thread is three and a half years old.

Leaking fuel tank problems should be solved by replacing the leaking fuel tank. I would not recommend half measures on this subject no matter if it's gas or diesel.

Recently I had a conversation with a friend about older gas boats and leaking fuel tanks. Until the 1970's typically everything on a boat wore out eventually including the wooden hull and the boat was scrapped. Problem solved.

However since the 1970's we've been building fiberglass boats that are going to last for who knows how long. Forever maybe. Think of all the gasoline Silvertons, Carvers, Bayliners and Sea Rays out there from the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's with old fuel tanks and crispy fuel lines.

I see a future with 30, 40, or even 50 year old gas boats exploding in marinas everywhere, every weekend, like it's the 4th of July all summer long.

As any boats built pre 1984 are in your time frame can we expect this fireworks show to start anytime soon?

...lol ...yes, I think so. Recently I've done a number of deals on older gas boats - none of which were safe to operate for sea trials. They required repairs to fuel systems and in each case this came as a surprise to the owner.
