    That is what the trans had in them from the commission so I didn't want to change. Since I only put on 200 hrs or less per year we change oil every 2 years maybe a little less.

    It shouldn't have a multigrade. I don't know of any transmission where a multi-grade is recommended? If they're ZF or Twin Disc they're supposed to have straight 40W, or straight 30W in cold climates.

    They are ZF. Maybe the next change will go to 40w. Will that cause any issues changing weight? Should I use synthetic or regular Shell Rotella 40w?

    You use Synthetic Mobile in your TD 5114s? On a couple of my boats, Were using the Same Delvac in the Gen-set and doing very well. I thought the TD clutches spec'd a straight weight.
    Before we get carried aweigh, How long have you been using that oil? Do you have pressure gauges and what do they run at? any problems at idle? Temp issues? I've always thought a synthetic oil would work better but nobody had a straight weight. Do you use trolling valves?
    I've been dreaming of using a synthetic clutch oil, I just have no case histories to go with. Some of us old dawgs want to learn new tricks.

    Oh wait,, ZFs? Heck, they use ATF up to 150 hp. Maybe they can go a multi weight.

    Knock on wood never an issue and use them regularly. What would the issue most likely be?

    Who has the factory ZF 350A manual out there. I can not find one. Need oil and second choice specs. I'l send a note to Texas.

    I would call ZF North America and ask them. I was told not to use a multigrade in their gears and to use straight 40W.

    actually, multigrade is ok . I pulled the manual for our BW190s (on 3412Es) and then looked up the updated list on line

    As you can see every tranny that uses regular oil (not ATF) either 30 or 40 can use either straight or multi. Only a handful require straight 50 only

    zf oil type change

    It's a tough decision to make skip. Keep what oil you're using and that seems to work. Or change years later to what the book seems to state. If it's still crystal clear as it was new, You may want to drag your feet in changing it.

    As Skippy J said also, call ZF. Tell them what ya got, how well it's working and should you change.

    I am a big fan of synthetic oils, Just can't find the right stuff for my 36 year old DDs & TDs.
