2 months more to go until the most important superyacht show opens again, the Monaco yacht show.

She will not only be the biggest MYS ever but also lists many interesting yachts this year IMO!

For those of you interested, here is the preliminary list of yachts attending the show. superyachts

Oh boy 150 euros for the Daily Pass at this year's Monaco Yachtshow and 500 euros for the Professional Pass (4 days) when purchased at the show. That is bold!

In 2007 they took 50 euros this grew over the last years to 80 euros but now they nearly doubled the price within a year. I think the Professional Pass was down to 250 last year.

Looks like they try to create more exclusivity and sort out those enthusiast and 'fake' people? I am not sure if this works simply by rising the price..

This a typical approach for several spezialised fairs. If they want to attract professionals and REAL customers and potential buyers, it is the easiest way to seperate the average fairgoer / lurker and the "high value" visitor by simply implementing a high hurdle, a ridiculously high entrance fee. And 150,- / 500,- Euros is ridiculous, even for the MYS.

But I have to admit, most potential customers and professionals like yacht captains, engineers and high level yachting people have invitations, means they do not pay at all and even their Champagne and snacks are free :p.

The MYS is the last fair in the world, I would attend without an invitation or at least some preplanned appointments. Just walking the jetties and looking at the stern of expensive Megayachts is boring and demotivating.

And most of all, far to many people from one specific country in Monaco and on the MYS than I can stand.

But having an exhibition booth or even a yacht moored at the MYS is even more ridiculously expensive. The Düsseldorf "boot", being the biggest indoor boat show in world might be expensive for exhibitors but MYS (2014) is totally through the roof.

I have to be there this year again but I have an invitation and a few planned appointments, I want to keep and I sleep on my boat, which will be moored far outside Port Hercules and outside the range of their money collectors and those people from this specific country.

Their is no business like show business, let us do it again

A good zoom-lens can be useful as there use to be a lot of yachts in the bay...

Natuzzi do not be discouraged by HTM09's words right away. Yes there 2-3 brokers who are very selective with potential viewers and it might be difficult to get on every newbuild exhibited by the shipyards.

But there are still many yachts you can visit. At least that's what I expirienced last year.. At the end it can varify from yacht to yacht and broker to broker.

Anyway the atmosphere at the MYS(particulary at night) is unique and the visit of this years MYS will hopefully be much fun and a great experience! Have and enjoy it! But do not forget to take some photos for us!:)

PM me your address and I will send you a daily pass valid for one day!

My intention was not to discourage anybody from visiting the MYS 2014. If you are able to enter some yachts of your interest and having enough time to crawl around on them, it will be very interesting. But looking at yachts only from the jetty is boring. And an efficient visit will need more than one day.

And Milow is correct, the After Show Parties at the MYS are great fun. But you need arrangements for that, otherwise you cannot stay on the confined MYS area after opening hours.

Maybe our young YF member Milow will give some advice on special request, what kind of tricks he used last year, to get permission to enter some famous megayachts :D. I prefer using formal and prearranged (and when ever possible, exclusive) appointments.

    Hello HTM09,

You are right you need at least 2 days for viewing the yachts even with prearranged appointments.

You know all that much that I did not attend these after show partys and never said that I did! I meant seeing the harbour full of yachts and the armada of superyachts at anchor in general during night.

A leading North european shipyard sent me two daily passes and was so generous to give me a tour on a 80m+ yacht. Asking for arragements for after show partys would be too much of a good thing for a schoolboy IMHO.

Perhaps I missunderstood your last point but it seemed to be somewhat facetious to me. As if you do not believe that I visited these yachts that is your issue not mine.
Never asked these brokers for additional information/specifiations after those visits, never toke up more time during these visit than needed! Never acted like those 'fake owners' who cost the industry a lot of money ever year!! No sneaky 'tricks'.

Sorry if I missunderstood your post.

Sorry Justus, you misunderstood my last post completely. It was actually ment as a compliment. For an 18 year old college boy like you, for the first time and on his own on the MYS 2013, you were actually pretty successful. With "trick" I did only mean, well done and not any kind of foolish behaviour.

Monaco in general and especially megayacht business at the MYS is really a lion's den and a first time visitor without a sponsor or guide can end up having a boring or frustrating but expensive day.

The only thing I am saying is, try to have a plan, what you want to see and try to have a contact person or a pre arranged appointment, to open some gate for you.

But MYS is more than just looking at big expensive boats. It is also about equipment, news and styles. For captains, engineers and chefs walking the jetties, talking to brokers, other captains and maybe even owners might be a course-setting event for their careers. I for example was introduced to my best engineer ever at the MYS 2009. He is with us ever since.

All of this will not change my very personal opinion, that I do not like Monaco, the MYS and its whole atmosphere. But as long as I am involved in bigger boats, I will and have to go there most likely every year, because it is one of the biggest and most important events as far as big yachts are concerned. I wish, we would have a pleasant event like the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in Europe.

But next week, there is an even more important exhibition fair coming up for me, the SMM 2014 in Hamburg (Shipbuilding, Machinery and Marine Technology International Trade Fair). Will post some news and pictures of relevance for YF.

I agree on MYS, it is not very nice for normal people, but next week we have the Cannes Show, which is now the major Boat Show in the Med. Sept 9-14:th.

    Hi HTM09,

If you are at SMM next week, please drop by at our stand in hall A1 (booth 312), where we'll show a replica of the Hull Vane along with a video explaining its working principles (disclaimer: I work for Hull Vane now, in addition to my own company).

I'll also be at the Monaco Yacht Show for Hull Vane, but we don't have a stand there. I am of course available for appointments.

    Cheers,

    Bruno

Milow232 thanks for the cheering up and the offer.
I can easily understand why MYS can be a hard place, but I am sure I'll have a great time one way or the other:cool:

Monaco is a special place, because of its situation (little independent town state) and its special setup as far as taxes are concerned. But this setup has attracted a special breed of people and "their" money. Because of that huge amount of money floating into that little place, Monaco became a very exclusive but ridiculously expensive and not very charming place. The MYS reflects that. Guests, which are willing and capable of playing this type of piano, will have a great time.

On the other hand, there are lots of beautiful girls running around Monaco and especially during the MYS or as my son calls them, silicone monsters, decorated with cristalline carbon :p.

But if you want to see the very big yachts, MYS is still the place. Genoa and Cannes are picking up but they are limited in size to about 50 meters in length. And there are almost more brokers than yards involved in Cannes. Oh, I forgot, Genoa has a new attraction next time, Costa Concordia.

I would not mind at all, if the caravan would carry on and annother place would take over Monacos annual share of the yachting glamour.

The bottom line is, we have to many yacht shows in Europe during the year. Many yards can't afford to attend all those shows anymore. We have a good example in Germany at the moment. The Hanseboot (Hamburg) indoor and inwater boatshow used to be THE boatshow for blow boaters in November every year in northern Europe. The show is getting smaller and smaller with less exhibitors and will die within the next years. The Duesseldorf Boot and Hanseboot in Hamburg are to much for the industry within one year. Plus all the others like Southampton, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Cannes, Genoa and Stockholm.

AMG, one of my sons will attend the Cannes festival de la plaisance 2014. I will tell him, to have a close look at the Delta 54 IPS :).

HTM09, I've heard (from our local Azimut dealer) that Genoa is dying as well....although last year there were both Chopi Chopi and Stella Maris present.

You are partly right, around the Millenium a lot of new people moved in, but you mainly meet them where you meet the tourists. The daily life in Monaco is still pretty nice and affordable for residents who have lived there for a while and know their way around. But certain things, like renting an apartment is now a little over the top. So even very wealthy are renting small Studios...

About Cannes, this year we will show the 33 Open and the new 80-footer. To see a 54 you need to go to Fort Lauderdale or look at a used 54 we have in Stockholm..;)

    Roll call.
Who will be in Monaco, either exhibiting or looking for their next cruiser? I'll be attending on Fri/Sat, camera in hand, doing some work for Yachtforums, The Triton, and myself. I've been perusing the threads for any local information and open to hearing more from those who have been there before. Staying in Nice and traveling over each day.
Looking forward to meeting YF members.

Okay my fault sorry! I am glade that you did not take offense at my missunderstanding, thanks.

Of course with a guide/ right contacts it must be a totally different expirience!

It is really a show for the big boys. I was actually surprised to see the huge amount of professional visitors, people working in the industry, walking on the docks.

I think the brokers/ exhibitors are more selective when you try to arrange appointments prior to the show. At the show try to make appointments right in the moring when the show just begun and the brokers are full of optimism! :D
Close to the T-jetty are a few snack bars where you can get a simple lunch for less money. Something you do not find that often in Monaco. But you can find many industry professionals there.

These bars, probably one of the most humble ones in Monaco, can be the place where the CEO of a leading shipyard sits down with a potential client in the evening. Proving that you can do this type of business without high prices and exclusivity Monaco is known for!
I left then quickly as I did not want to overhear the conversation.

CapTom take the train from Nice to Monaco and do not rent a car. A ticket costs roughly 2 euros and it takes c.a 20 minutes but the track is beautiful following the coastline! I am looking definitely forward to your photos hope you enjoy the show! It takes only 5 minutes form the underground train station in Monaco to the harbour.

AMG, you are absolutely correct. People owning a flat or appartement in Monaco for serveral years and avoiding the hot spots like the casino area or Port Hercules, can live nicely there during the season, as long as they go on vacation during the formula 1 race and the MYS. But people living in the appropriate streets, are renting their balkonies away during the formula 1 race anyway. A special place.

A friend of mine and jetty neighbour from Switzerland bought an appartment in Monte Carlo many years ago for a little over 10 Mio Euros (I thought, ridiculously expensive at that time) and sold it last year for more than 35 Mio Euros. We are talking about an appartement in a tower building, not a first line villa with sea view . Thats what I would call a pretty good deal. Is that not even more expensive than an appartment at Marmots avatar adress in 9114 S. Central Ave in Manhattan? But most buyers in that category, come from the same area of the world and that makes Monaco so unpleasant.

BTW., the Delta 54 IPS was shown on the Cannes exhibition list. The 80 tripple IPS is even better, as this is the boat, he is mainly interested in. Too bad, my sons did not inherit my blowboater gene, they are both fast boaters
