For a Long Islander everyplace is west. But yes, we're heading ENE 080*. I'm still trying to keep straight which way is "Up" the lakes and which is "Down". Not nice to confuse an old feeble mind.
So, for future reference, which way does the Tennessee River flow? When you enter it at Kentucky Lake and head south will you be with or against the current?
Nycap. Why did you not go the short way around the West side of my Isle? There is a Channel. Is it one way? Like divided highway? We're just teasing you. But I do like having an island named after me.
Ask me next summer. Right now that falls into the category of useless trivia, of which I've got way too much rolling around.
Horace Greeley has been stuck in my head since I was a kid (more useless trivia), and yes I am stubborn.
And it's a pretty island too. So I have a feeling it's well named. There's a fixed bridge there. Didn't feel like lowering my height. And you know I like being teased. BTW, you're not so far off on the divided highway comment. Just before Detroit it is...twice. First, the down-bound stays to the other side of the islands you saw on my left coming up, and the side I was on is divided as well. I'm surprised that none of you wise guys noticed that I was traveling with red markers on my left AND right. The secondary down-bound traffic would go to the other side of the red markers on my left.
26' with (4) antennae down, but 37' with them up. 18' with arch down. All depends how badly I need to shrink. Today I didn't need to shrink at all since it would only save me 10 minutes off a long day, and I was dog tired.
That shows one big change over the years in Hatteras. That's why Belle was surprised because we were at one time looking at their 60' MY. The distance to the top of the windshield is only 15'. The distance to the top of the arch is only 19'6". And the Antenna's generarlly seen are shorter. I'd guess in all respects, the boat you're on is about 3' taller than a current 60. And every recent 60 I've seen would fit under 32' I believe, without even lowering antenna's.
Yes. Everywhere we've been so far we've been the big guy. We're bigger in most dimensions than most 65 footers and we're a 56. The Hatteras 56 MY is the epitome of the American style yacht before everybody went to the shrunk down European style back in the early 90's. There's one manufacturer of European styled yachts that I noticed a few years ago had shrunk everything inside their boats from chairs to counters and sinks to about 3/4 normal size or less to make it appear they have everything. Our galley sink is 8" deep by 21" x 17" ID. When was the last time you saw that on a 56'? I could almost do a polka in the galley.
Because she's 74,000 lbs being pushed by a pair of 892TIs. She'll top out at about 18 kts, but we'd like these 30 year old motors to make it the rest of the trip (we've already done over 3,200nm), plus we don't want to burn 72 gph. She could definitely be propped better, but it's unnecessary for what we're doing. The bottom is also blistered (being fixed this winter). There's also some inaccurate gauge issues that we're waiting to rectify this winter, and I don't want or need to push numbers that I don't know are accurate. We're not beating this boat silly. 10-12kts is how this lady enjoys being treated. This is not a transport or a race. This is a long cruise. Now please do not hijack this thread into an engineering discussion. Been there/ done that once this week already.
For the Great Loop portion of the Tennessee, the river flows south to north. So, to go to the Gulf, you are heading upstream, or up-bound as the tows say, until you enter the Tenn-Tom in northern Alabama. Aproximately 200 miles.
