Someone that makes it a habit to operate vehicles while intoxicated usually has a history of doing so. That means his family should be considered accessories to the crime. They knew and did nothing to stop him from risking lives. It really isn't much different than loading him up with drugs, convincing him that short people are trying to get him, then giving him a chainsaw and turning him loose at a daycare. At least from the victim's family's perspective. Plus, people who hear about his family going down with him may think twice before they risk their own families. The current punishments aren't working, time to bump it up a notch.

Unfortunately, addiction is addiction. There is nothing a family member can do to stop an alcoholic or drug addict from doing the things they do. You cannot punish the whole family, for the actions of 1. However, you can punish that 1 so severely that others will think twice about doing the same thing.

First there's a big difference between having a accident due to bad eyeglasses and chopping someone up with your yacht because you're a drunk. Second, when someone hurts you, you go after that which will cause them the worst pain. Third, He'll buy his way out of serious jail time and what he does serve will be at a resort jail. I'd go after him and anyone near him in the worst ways I could think of. They enjoyed the life he provided, let them pay for it. Guilt by association. Share the good, share the bad. As I said before, I have zero sympathy for drunks or anyone who tollerates them.

It is no different. If you NEED eyeglasses to drive and choose not to get your eyes checked at the regular intervel and you kill someone driving machinery, it is no different then choosing to drink alcohol (or take drugs) and drive the same machinery and kill someone. BOTH are the same choice and both have the same concequences.

Throw the blind (drunk) guy in jail, usually the bread winner, the rest of the family is going to suffer one way or another. Wifes name still on the mortgage and the bank just wants their money, not a sad story.
Then damages have to be paid. In Florida, most houses are near max loan or already upside down. Collect from who? The co-owner of the boat or car. Insurance has a limit.

Yep, everybody suffers. Self induced suffrage.

Now, if the wife shot the drunk husband before he ran somebody over (in Florida), is that a "Stand some ground" law invoked?

Have you ever tried to reason with a drunk person or try to talk a drunk person out of driving. You're dilusional and it's impossible. If they were on board, were they supposed to throw him overboard with a lifejacket and take the wheel? Come on, get real.
