1989 3807 aft cabin. Gas Gauges. Toggle on helm shows starboard tank level and nada on port tank. I read elsewhere that if you jumper the sending unit and the gauge pegs out, then sending unit is bad. Can anyone verify? If true, has anyone replaced sending unit and what that will that entail? Thanks!
Sparks in a gas boat bilge is very dangerous. With that in mind, turn all power off, short the pink wire (signal wire at sender) to ground. Power up and observe gauge. If Standard (SW type) gauge, it will swing past full, If original VDO, it will swing past empty. Remove all power before restoring the wire connects correctly. REPEAT THIS LINE 5 TIMES OUT LOUD,,, "Sparks on a gas boat, especially around the fuel tank, is dangerous."
If sw gage and it swings full is that telling me sending unit good or bad? Understand about sparks. I work in the grain industry where sparks are deadly....
That tells you the gauge and wires to your test point is good. If you're testing at the sender, Yes, I would blame the sender. Remember, resistance in that last crimp can lead you astray.
If you jumpered the wires at the sender and the gauge then goes to full when power is turned on. Either your fuel/water/etc tank is completely empty or the sender is indeed bad.
heres a drawing that may make it easy to visualize sounds the same like on my carver i have a momentary switch to read each tank you must also make sure that it is operating too unlike the norm when your fuel guage works all the time. http://www.moellermarine.com/sites/...ring Diagram and Industry Recommendations.pdf changing a sender is not hard at all as long as you have some acess to the top of the fuel tank where its mounted. there are several brands out there assuming its a standard set up the one thing you need to know is the depth of the tank then you can get a new sender or universal unit which you will set up for your tank when you get it very easy. then mount it in the old spot
