    William Hand motorsailer

In the next few days I hope to be visiting this Willian Hand design, GUILDIVE
Ketch Guildive History, Sixpence, William Hand Jr., Wheeler Shipyard, Sailing Charters Castine & Searsport Maine

I've not explored this designer's vessels to any great extent, so I am really looking forward to the visit. This past spring I had occassion to spot her on the Eastern shore of MD, and took a few photos of in her 'winter stowage condition'. Now she is getting ready for a cruise north to visit Nova Scotia this summer.

Hey Kirk, are you still following this subject thread? I tried logging onto your blog, but I have forgotten my login wording. I'll try a private email if I can find it.

Meantime I see you have located the only other Discoverer model. Got some more details, photos??

    Hi Brian,

The blog's at Kirk Pierce's blog | Institute of Maritime History you can get the post about our boat's sister-ship "Gypsy" at Sister Ship - Blanca, 17Jun2013 | Institute of Maritime History

I've updated the post to make the thumbnails clickable for larger images. You shouldn't need a login, unless you want to comment.

Haven't heard from the other owner since the boat was trailered to Ohio. I supposed they've got some work to do before she's back in the water.

Headed to Mystic Seaport to copy the Philip Rhodes plans and design notes next week. More postings after that!

Now this might be interesting technology for fuel efficiency on certain boats designed around it, or even for introduction in a single engine long range yacht. You could run only 1 engine at a time, and shut the other one down for maintanence or just swap back and forth and always have the same HP get home and same set of spare parts.

Or, it could also be used with a variable pitch propellor and one engine could be run per side or time for efficient cruising speed, then the second for speed (or 3rd and 4th). Of course with modern diesels.

Do you have any pictures of the boat and the engine setup? I'd really like to see them.

Looks like someone put a canopy over that aft deck, and a opening in the stern out onto a 'swim platform'.

    Sterling Hayden link update

I just took a look at the introductory posting of this subject thread and discovered the link to Sterling Hayden was no longer valid. So Thought an update was appropriate

I remember viewing this listing years ago after Brian mentioned the boat. The images AFTER the line drawings seem to be that listing of the boat, BEFORE the present owner bought it and partially renovated it.
Wonder why it is back on the market after obviously going through quite a bit of restoration?
If it were in my backyard, I would be very keen.

WOW, I'm going to have a serious look at that vessel....again. But what a lousy time of the year for this to come up. Winter coming on, and I have a 2-3 month trip planned to Thailand to escape what I believe is going to be a COLD, wet winter for the east coast.....just a feeling.

Besides that, I was on my way over to the 'dark side' (from sailing craft to power boats :D ). I was ready to 'adopt' one of these nostalgic looking Pilgrim trawler vessels.

PS: And if I remember correctly she had a number of broken frames that had not been repaired??...so a complete out of the water survey is almost a requirement.

After 99 years in business, the Alden design firm closed in 2008 and the plans were donated to the Hart Nautical Collection of MIT Museum. Most of the collection was cataloged and scanned by the Alden holding company under the direction of Niels Helleberg, a designer at Alden since 1971. Helleberg continued providing design and print services until closing his office in January 2014.

Niels Helleberg passed away peacefully at the age of 74 on February 21, 2014. You can read his obituary in the Boston Globe

Niels was an amazing resource for all things relating to Alden Designs where he started in 1971. His designs ranged from 15' to 169'
