It happened when the boat was new in Jupiter inlet on one of it's maiden seatrials for Staluppi. The boat hit bottom in the inlet and had a jet ripped out of it and sank in Jupiter Inlet or just outside of it. They shot a ton of ping pong balls into the boat to create bouyancy and floated it and fixed it.

Let me adjust my eyes here , Number one , Octopussy's sea trials were in the Zuiderzee in the Netherlands under the direction of the build team lead by Baron Rolle , Your saying that Octopussy / the 132 Heesen sank? AND then had had ping pong balls stuffed up its ass?? Have another beer my friend as I think your Very confused as to your facts.

Yes, it sank in Jupiter inlet when it was nearly new. They blew tons of ping pong balls into the engine room which created the bouyancy needed and floated the boat. I will try to find the article, but it's been over 2 decades since it happened.

    Hey CaptJ,
I'm not going to waste a lot of time here, do some research , Google or ask some salty dogs that were around in the late eighties. You have the wrong boat. The Heesen "Octopussy" never had fish swimming through the main saloon. your thinking of the Dennison that Staluppi owned named "For Your Eyes Only" People in the know referred to it as "Fish Eyes Only" And that was the boat that bounced off the bottom going out of Hillsboro Inlet and sucked a few car tires into the intake and floundered in a ebb tide that had waves breaking over the transom intake grills flooding the engine room.

    Hi,

I would agree with Captholli on this one.

Google is your friend here , there is plenty out there about the Denison having problems in Hillsboro Inlet, nothing about a similar fate befalling Octopussy

Straining my memory I seem to remember hearing a similar story about Moonraker near Puerto Rico back in the '90s, or was that someone just confusing the two boats? Never heard of any problems with Octopussy (what a beautiful lady).

Back on topic I recall the ferry out in Vancouver buying several jet boats, and promptly giving them up as they tended to suck logs in. Jets are great for speed, but as we all know speed brings some serious costs on the water. The closest I've seen jets come to mainstream are waverunners and their big brothers, and even they spend a fair amount of time stopped, clearing out weeds around here.

KaMeWa jets were maint. hungry for sure and would suck debris up past the intake grill (Lobster pot lines) and we would have to open the inspection port on top of the intake tunnel and pull the line out by hand. Jets are very smooth as far as vibration goes but the maint. on the buckets was fairly extensive during haul outs. Rolls Royce purchased KaMeWa several years ago and I'm sure they've done some re-engineering to make them less needy. I would prefer a forward facing prop on a tractor drive over a jet every time.

I think that was Miss Turnberry

Here is something that describes this and others: Motor Yacht For Your Eyes Only

It seems logs weren't the only problems.

It might have been "For your eyes only", but could've sworn it was Octopussy and Jupiter Inlet and not Hillsboro. They kept it pretty hush hush when it happened, but then again that was prior to the internet.

I'm not a big fan of the stern drives. When kept in saltwater, they too are maintanence nightmares and corrode a lot. Most people around here won't work on them. I do prefer the pods over the stern drives any day of the week. Especially 40' and over. BUT the hull has to be designed for them and they have to be mounted perpendicular and not on the same angle as the V.

I've never been a fan of the jets for the reasons mentioned and would rather have Arnesons over Jets anyday of the week.

The two fastest ferries in the shallow Stockholm Archipelago since about 25 years, have KaMeWA waterjets. 42 meters long, cruising around 25 knots and the draft is only 4 feet. Sucking up logs..? I donĀ“t think so...:)

Your not going to get a log or "Dead head" past the intake grill on KaMeWa's just small line and cordage and if the impellor speed is sufficient it will chew the debris up and spit it out. We only seemed to have trouble @ low RPM and of course the most critical time when maneuvering to put the boat on the dock. (Murphy's Law)

"Scandal" doesn't cover it... it was a fiasco. The government decided they wanted to do something, they appointed cronies to oversee the project, and they ignored the huge number of people who pointed out problems with their plans.

    Hi,

I thought this might ring a few bells with any members in the area as I gather it was an all consuming political fireball for a while.
