Thanks for the updates and pics !! Very enjoyable to follow you on your cruise. BTW, AIS shows that you are still in Albany ?

yeah we've been a little confused about that also. marine traffic has been losing that continually. just had the box changed. hoped it would cure it but it didn't. may have to go for a bigger antenna.

AIS will not work in the Erie Canal or Oswego system as there are no AIS recievers
Marine Traffic have another app called MAIS what it dose your phone will send a signal to Marine Traffic .com and it will work anywhere, but you must turn the APP of before you get in your car as it will show the boat going down the highway. The signal your phone puts will not be displayed to vessels in your area as it gose directly to Marine Traffic web page.
Last many boaters were using that APP so their famlies could follow them all the time.

It can be gotten on a cell phone app, but not via their regular service. I also see they have some kind of satellite service. What's the word I'm looking for that ticks me off to no end...UPSELL. Anybody remember when companies gave their best effort right out of the gate?

    Almost there

Another beautiful day on the Erie Canal, and a scoot across Lake Oneida. Once again we have a beautiful neighbor here in Brewerton, the Elco Spider it II.

Picky, picky, picky. Nothing is ever straight and level on a boat. Not even the captain or camera.:D

I'm sure that bridge just looked a lot lower than it was.

No it didn't, and the boat tops out about 4' above the camera. It was about 20'. Valhalla stands 37' with antennas up. 26' to radar arch. We had her stripped down to 18'6" and held our breath on most bridges on the 2 canals since they don't have ledgers.

We got held up at the Oswego lock #1 when their bridge broke in the down position from 0800 to about 1400. For awhile it looked like we'd be there until Monday. The lock-master suggested we might want to consider coming through on plane and turning Valhalla into am express cruiser.:D Last night we brought the arch, bimini & antenae back up. Like her much better tall.:)

Great shots Old Phart. Did you happen to catch the one at Little Falls the other day? My wife flipped out as we entered under the 20 tom gate into the chamber, and then rose over 40'. Very cool. The townspeople gather at the top to watch for entertainment. The catwalks on Valhalla are covered, and you can't see up when working the back half of the boat. In another lock, as the overhang came above the wall I found myself looking into the faces of about a dozen Amish children as they knelt to get the first view inside our windows. As it rose further we were met by about 40 Amish filled with question, jokes and fun conversation. One of those never to be forgotten experiences.

There were several locks with big construction going on and barges covering the entrances. You'd have to come into the current from the spillway, hang a hard tight turn followed by a hard left around the back of the barge and into the chamber with the current pushing on you. Kept our attention, but fun and challenging.

Views not changing for a few weeks so we cut the public feed. We're now sitting in Oswego on the edge of Lake Ontario. We'll be heading out on leg 4 (Lake Ontario, Welland Canal, Lake Erie) about the 3rd week of June. We'll be turning it back on for the start of that leg.
    --------------------------------------------------------

    Roger,
Looking forward to meeting you. Maybe you could be our 3rd for the Welland if you're available. I'll be in touch.

I knew 20-23' but they sure looked less than 20. I guess from the vantage point. I'm sure for a few moments they felt less too, felt like they were 18'5".

    I would have been ducking.

Sure did. No ducking at the lower helm though. Just holding your breath, waiting to hear the crunch, and hoping someone with a camera won't be around to shoot it and post on YF like some we've seen.:D Chicago's our next low spot, possibly be 19'1"/:eek:

P.S. This was the most beautiful, fun, exciting, adventurous and best leg of the Loop so far. I highly recommend it for anyone who has the opportunity. Met a ton of really nice people along the way too, and that's the best part.
