Those who have not cruised into N.Y. Harbor should find our bow cam (Valhalladoestheloop.com) very interesting tomorrow. Starting at about 2:30
(1430) we'll pass Staten Island to the left and Coney Island, Brooklyn (with the parachute jump) to the right. We'll then go under the Verrizano Narrows Bridge, past the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island (where many of our parents or grandparents first set foot on American soil),and the Battery at the base of Manhattan with the majestic new Freedom Tower.
    Enjoy.

I agree with you CAP. Seeing NYC from the water really is something special. I've been on the water forty years and entering the city from the Long Island Sound is probably my number one favorite cruising experience.

We were on our way from Boston to Thunderbolt, GA and had to sit for a day because of bad weather. There were reports of multiple tornadoes in the Bronx that day. It was about two weeks before Superstorm Sandy.

Here's a shot of lower Manhattan I took the next day after leaving Liberty Landing at first light heading to Ocean City, MD.

I remember when we approached that we anticipated it being incredible, but it must much more impressive than we imagined. When you're in NYC you just get a little of it at a time. Going to the Empire State Building or elsewhere and looking down, it looks fairly normal. But approaching it by water, it's better than any of the photos you've ever seen. We had even taken one of the cruises before circling the island but it was too close to get the view you get on approach. And there is no other city with such magnificence.

Had seen some man-made debris floating by including a bait station. Then as I was talking with the wife on the phone I saw something orange flash by. Called to my DH who was at the helm to flip us around and track back. Then it occurred to me that he has better eyes and I'm a better navigator. So I sent him to the bridge with glasses while I ran our track. About a half hour of searching turned up nothing. but small debris. So we're back underway. Needless to say my DH just got a lesson about the MOB button on the GPS, the Williamson maneuver and back-tracking. Life on the water.

Unfortunately, I missed your approach but did get here in time for entertainment from the boat that just pulled into the dock in front of you.

Actually that was probably my second docking. We went into Chelsea Piers in Manhattan for probably my 100th and definitely my LAST time. I can deal with the fact that you rock like a hobby horse, and that the area is questionable, and that there'a building there with turbines on the roof that sound like helicopters landing all night long, but I will not spend another night getting up every 20 minutes to reset breakers and do without air conditioning because they're too cheap to update they're electrical system. Not to Marine Max: 175 max voltage doesn't cut it. Now I'm across the river in a terrific area and a terrific marina, Newport.

Newport is a great marina. Our only trip to NY by water, we docked at North Cove. More convenient but I'd say Newport is a nicer marina and having Path right there sure is convenient.

Definitely. 2nd time here. Even has a good breakwater, so no wakes. Chelsea is a nightmare on so many levels, and absolutely OFF my recommend list forever. I've stayed at North Cove. Nice, but too far downtown and still dealing with a lot of wakes.

I always stay at Liberty Landing and never have any issues there with power or wake action. Plus it's easy to take a ferry across to Manhatten.

Agree. The reason I tend to shy away from them is only because they're a bit crowded, and there's not much within walking distance. No complaints with either Newport or Liberty though. And of course it's Liberty for fueling.

The restaurant at Liberty is pretty good. Yeah there is nothing within walking distance, but you can hop on a ferry and be in Manhatten in no time and walk around all you want over there. I'll take a good nights sleep and no shorepower issues over having places to walk to and not being able to sleep, any day of the week.

Yes, Liberty is somewhat isolated, and NYC may be the city that never sleeps, but the water taxi does. It shuts down around 11:00 PM.

If you want to meet some interesting people there's nothing quite like taking the PATH train from WTC to New Jersey at 2:00 AM and walking from the station to Liberty Landing.

As a kid I lived in a crash pad (11 kids in a 5th floor walk-up cold water flat) in the East Village (Alphabet City). I've met enough "interesting" people. lol.

BTW, the bow cam is now shut until we start cruising again about 5/23 hopefully. Hope you all enjoyed. I tried to give you all a good view of the Statue of Liberty and the Freedom Tower. DK if you heard, but they plan to inter the remains of the unidentified victims of 9/11 at the tower. Very fitting.
