Have experience with Cat engines. Looking at pre owned Viking 56 and 61's. Find many have Manns and MTU V16 and V12 Engines. We hear concerns about costs of repairs and integrity of engines and finding qualified mechanics. Looking for feedback from others experiences with MTU's.
    Thanks

Very very few of the 61's had MTU v16's. Maybe five? Those were the 1800 HP versions IIRC. I believe none of the 56's had the 16's. The 12's were more common- but the standard engine was the MAN units. Cat and MTU were options. Neither were common-rail- which required specific training by the techs in order for them to work on engines and have factory warranty intact. Nothing wrong with any of the three. The non common rails are easy to find people/companies to work on them up and down the east coast of the USA. MTU 12's are a fine engine- it's the V10's which seemed to be unliked.

Yeah.......the MTU's are a fairly good engine....the accessories are not the best......starters, alternators, fresh water pumps etc
