The following is the text of a speech I gave at the 2013 Ocean Reef Vintage Weekend to honor Joe Bartram with a lifetime achievement award: Best, Maldwin
Maldwin, My condolences to you and Joe's family on his passing. I know he was a friend to you, and probably more. And thanks for introducing me to him back at Ocean Reef a few years ago. It was good to meet the man who gave so much to this industry. Fair winds, Joe.
The yachting world and the marine industry has lost one of its greats. They don't make em like that anymore...
Condolences to Joe's family and many friends in the industry, specifically to Maldwin and Ken Bracewell who knew him well.
Can't help but wonder how many of the chit-chatters on YF will have as many GOOGLE returns as Joe Bartram Jr? A legend in his own time; unlike some, who seem to be a legend in their own mind. https://www.google.com/#q=Joe+Bartram+Jr https://www.google.com/#q=Joe+Bartram+Jr+nyyc https://www.google.com/#q=Joe+Bartram+Jr+america's+cup
Loved reading his nephew's stories. I'm new here so didn't know him, but feel like those who did were very fortunate.
Very fortunate, indeed! I was lucky and honored to have considered Joe a friend and mentor. One thing in particular that I am proud to have learned from Joe, is how important it is to foster the next generation of yachties. I watched how he helped-along and coddled the good ones, whence he’d met them, and to put them into a position where they could grow and thrive. How much does the yachting industry owe him for this effort alone? It is hard to say for sure, but I am certain that his touch for this is far-reaching, and I will always strive do the same for young and aspiring yacht crew, as I have seen him do so many times. I surely wish that the success and achievements that he helped to foster in others were nearly as satisfying for him to have witnessed as they were for those who accomplished them. I certainly take get a huge swelling of pride when I see success in those who I have taught and helped, so I truly hope that he enjoyed that same feeling of satisfaction in knowing he had been a key player in nurturing so much talent and kindness in so many. In my mind, this will be the legacy of Joe Bartram! Even while writing this, the saddest of words, I am smiling and experiencing goose bumps with this thought. I hope that we yachties will always continue to make him proud. I know I will always continue to try. Now that he has cast his lines, I wish him the fairest of winds and wonderful following seas.
