There should be a compulsory course for people thinking of it, if that sounds extreme to others, then take a look at "Rescue Centres" that are run by bird lovers to take care of birds that are being abandoned, abused or inherited. A friend runs one here on the Gold Coast and there are some sad stories.

I see my Macaw as being permanently mischievous, fun BUT needy friend. That is not a "pet" but a friend you are responsible for over decades, sometimes 60 or more years.

Years ago I was driving to dinner when I saw a cockatiel on the road that cut through 2 fields. Knowing that it'd soon be racoon food I stopped to save it. If I had thought I'd have realized that there was a reason someone left it there. I didn't even take the hint when the little B.....d almost took off my thumb off as I picked him up.
At the time I worked out of my house...a small house. "Fiesty" found a friend in a mocking bird outside the window by his cage. He'd scream and the mocking bird would scream back, so he screamed back at the mocking bird. All day every day. By the time my wife came home each day I'd be trembling like a guy going through detox. This went on for about 3 months until I was ready to cook him for dinner. Nice guy that I am, I instead gave him to my wife's cousin who had two of the most obnoxious kids ever to walk on earth. Figured it was a match made in hell. Even there he only lasted 3 months. No she didn't cook him although I would have come to the bar-b-que. She gave the beast to a woman who had an aviary in her home.
I'll stick with dogs and cats.
