After years of watching my fellow yacht' men and ladies I bought something that if my four boys sunk it or ran a ground - I would be ok with it. So the 1988 Carver 27 was a good match up. However the Outdrive "Volvo Penta" is missing.

Ok - now the clincher - I know dip about boats other than I wanted one and consider safety on the water to others and myself a cornerstone. Ok - so with all you experts out there - any idea of what OutDrive (SternDrive) came with this beauty back-n-a-day? Any ideas for my journey in determination?

The motor is a 454 that has been remanded - and painted some ugly red color. So no telling what power connected to the Caver. If someone can just tell me what Volvo Penta "Originally" came with this boat - I would be in your debt - well maybe over happy hour.

    Hi,

You might not be able to read the replies as it seems you were unable to read the FAQ's when you signed up here.

You have posted a question about your specific brand of boat in the general technical section.

It wont attract many experts in your type of vessel as it would if it were posted in the correct section which is here.

You have included your e mail address in the post another thing that is not an accepted practice on here.

There were 3 to 4 drives during that year. If you can post a picture of the transom shield we can respond better.
AQ270b, 280, 280 with trim with or with out dp, 290 with or with out dp.
Late 80s was before Volvo and OMC started working with each other so it would be one of the original AQ systems.
Red was the original Volvo/Chevy color. I would think the 260hp/350cid would have been more original. 454cid may have a bit much for a factory 270 but could have a life. Don't think there was a Y exhaust collector for LB & 270. Volvo used a souped up 350cid option that made high rpm and near 300hp on the 280 and early 290s. Factory 454cid's were usually on the 290 & 290DPs.

Send some pictures in and one of the top of the transom shield from the inside.

Were looking for tilt mechanism, trim equip, and drive helmet folded down.

Of course, if the factory tag is still in place would make this real easy. Inside, upper stb on the transom shield.

Yep, That is the AQ290 transom shield.
    Modified exhaust Y collector.
Chev MK-III, 454cid raw water cooled.
Holley carb. electric choke. vacuum secondaries.
Mounted on a Q-jet intake manifold with a Holly to GM adapter plate.
    Merc styled exhaust manifolds.
Prestolite distributer and coil bracket off of a 350cid engine. Still works but you can see the throttle
cable lock does not fit. Probably one bolt holding the bracket in place.
Looks like some remaining factory power steering parts in place but a Sea Star styled hydraulic cylinder
    installed.
Raw water thermostat housing also from a 350cid.
Probably the original Johnson raw water pump mounted to the crank pulley center from the 350cid.
    This may be undersized.
    Prestolite alternator.
Original Volvo/AC styled mechanical fuel pump may have come from the 350cid also. It should work.

On your x-mas list, look for a AQ290 DP drive. V-8 Gas gear ratio.
    B-4 prop set.
    Maybe a new carrier bearing
    New bellows,
    New water hose
New trim hoses (not in pic but way in there between the trim cylinders are two black rubber lines. Pain to replace but trust me, you want them replaced now.
Shift cable log (rubber hose on the inside of shield that shift cable runs thru
    All new clamps.
Check the shift cable real good.
Bucket full of mounting pins, bolts & washers.

    You are Great

It is interesting - in life no one really helped me nor for that matter did I ask a whole lot. But here in this forum I have found answers for things I could not figure out

    Thank you

    NO, Need AQ290 or AQ290DP.

DP = Duo Prop. Will cost more but you can back the boat. With out the DP, you just back in circles like a single inboard.

In the Carver threads you may have got more responses, not sure.
I'm not sure if this was a real Carver question or a Volvo Question or Technical question.
One of the YF Admins will find this thread and ensure it's in the correct place. This helps to ensure maximum exposure for your questions.

    Technical

    Hi Ralph

Thank you for keeping an eye on my thread. I can tell you, "the Carver thread was non-responsive with more folks willing to cast stones due to my lack of understanding.

However my post here garnered vital information from "rcapps" which was complete and allowed me to complete my journey.

I'm surprised to hear you say that about the Carver folks. As a new boater myself, I made the same mistake about posting in the wrong section but once moved over to the Carver threads I was warmly welcomed and got some sound advice from knowledgeable folks happy to help!

Give the Carver forum here another chance and I think you'll find nice people who in fact do remember that everyone was a newbie once and they're willing to help out if a question is detailed properly so the people being asked understand what the OP needs and how best to respond.
