Submersible catamaran??? Hello? Shape follows function, and below the surface going in a catamaran doesn't make any sense. Is like a submersible train or a submersible bus.

I've been on the tourist submarine in Oahu, which is a real sub, goes down to 100 feet or so... and is really a nice, authentic submarine experience (or so I think... not having a Navy bubblehead component in my curricula vitae...). The sub draws a lot and is not practical to come into the "tourist" port, so it has an offshore "home base" it goes to in the AM (from its super deepwater home port) and returns from at night. A support boat (e.g. "dude tour boat") loads the paying cattle at the resort and ferries everyone out to the sub, loads them up for the 1 hour ride, and meets them upon surfacing for the return to shore.

Takeaways: (1) a "real" sub on a non-military basis is in the art of the possible, and (2) with a support boat it might be adaptable to the megayacht domain (e.g. dedicated support ship that carries the toy in a floodable well deck).

Just requires a fearless underwriter with a sense of adventure!

It progressed beyond "possible" to reality about 40 years ago.

Several yachts have had manned submersibles onboard as "toys" in very successful operations.

It does not take a "floodable well deck", just a crane like any other larger tender.

Insurance is easily obtained through all the normal sources. The loss and risk history is far better than the yachts themselves.

FWIW: the Costa Concordia could be called a submersible cruise ship if so desired.

I don't think so. Submersible applies to vessels that operate underwater. The Concordia is just sitting there rusting. I guess also implied in manned submersibles is the ability to unsubmerge, at least if you want anyone to actually man it.

WScott52, I understood from the post I quoted that the poster had him/herself had a yacht at some stage previously that had sunk and had in their words become a "submersible".

It is in the same context that I used this word to describe the cruise ship that has also sunk and needs help to re float.

I was not suggesting that the ship was capable of submerging and ascending on demand if that's what you thought.

Nah, mainly I was just being a PITA.
