Huckins I know well



I know this Huckins well and was always in top shape. I think she is selling in the 400's which is a great price for any 85 footer.

I have been watching this boat for the last few years, what a thoroughbred beauty!
If I had to pick a classic she would be the one!

This vessel is still for sale.. I need advice; I like the looks, engine room is very practical, air cond is new but not the right choice and bad installation, gen set is also new but too big and heavy for a Huckins, interior must be all redone, complete paint job needed and so many more problems, but: I still like it!!!
What was so wrong about this vessel design? How fast can it be with 1000 HP?
Not worried about servicing Man engines, generator, air conditioning, electrical, paint, wood work.. I do this for a living all day long, my problem is to find out about any performance sea trials from the past on this particular vessel. Alain

Mabruteam, I can't figure out which Huckins you are considering. Before buying SUBITO nee Downwind, a 46' Sedan Huckins, I looked at several boats. But I don't know which one you are considering.
Of course you still like it! Huckins are infectious. They are beautiful designs, fast, simple, elegant. You have spotted an issue that is common in updated Huckins - overweight. A heavy generator is just wrong. Huckins are built to be lightweight and not cargo ships filled with massive equipment better suited for a condo than a racehorse (to mix metaphors). I grew up on a 52' Oceanic built for my step-father in 1948. He wouldn't put anything that weighed anything on board - no a/c, no radar, no generator, no heavy furnishings. Good thing my mother and his captain were thin! He loved the speed and handling.
As I'm sure you have been told Dick Rogers at Huckins is a wealth of knowledge about every Huckins built and is happy to talk with anyone about them.

Huckins #406 65 ft 1971

The one I am contemplating is a Huckins hull 406 made in 1971, 65 ft, called Charlotte lady, in dry storage now for more than 7 years in NY
Engines are 1989 mans 1050 HP, I need to find out from someone that was part of this vessel history.. For sale by the Bunky Hearst State.
Yacht world listing under Huckins 65, shows some pictures, not able to seatrial before paying in full, as is the way it is. Is this one a good Huckins design? Mid engines, long shafts, large engines same as some PT boats, heavy, heavy..
What is the real history of this vessel? Original engine design? What was modified over the years? Mabru

Thank you for your reply, I am now all confused, I was able to locate some documents reporting repairs on wood, new steering, new thru hulls, strainers, plumbing, engine insulation, air cond, electrical, shafts, props, engine repairs adding more that $450k back in 2003/2004.. Most done half way or controversial, nobody got sea trial results after the refit, Man engines dealer was not able to locate any data about the rebuild. The Hearts state kept that vessel on dry covered storage for over 7 years! I am not sure why.
The reply from Cindy Purcell at Huckins was limited to the unsuccessful engine rebuild in the past and the fact that with 1050 HP engines this vessel and successful final engine repairs this vessel was able to deliver close to 23 kts, slow in my opinion for a Huckins..
Why the Hearts invested so much money on a boat that was performing so poorly?
What was the advantage of a PT boat ? was heavier, less HP per pound but better performance. Best Regards, Mabru

From what you have discovered I would strongly suggest you get the best survey possible for this boat. Huckins are light and fast and simple. That is a large part of their appeal. I don't think 23kts for a 65' older boat to be all that bad. My 46' Huckins I suspect (when her renovations ever get finished) won't do much more than that. Maldwin and WI3175 are both well versed in these boats and good resources. I think it would be worth your while to look into the unique hull design of the Huckins which gives her the speed and handling for which they are known. Huckins built only a few PT boats but many consider them the best. Elco I think was the major supplier of PTs.

The 53' Huckins, 'Watermark' just went by headed north on the Waccamaw River. She was mentioned earlier in this thread as having been on the hard somewhere for sale, so she must have sold.

Yes she did sell I did have a very nice conversation with the owner a few months back .he was getting some work done at Huckins
