By your example then, you are implying that Costa directed him to sail the Concordia dangerously close to the island.

    Hi,

He might get to play with it too.... after he is sick of what happens when he bends over to pick up the soap in the slammer.

Since the very start there has been speculation that they encourage that behavior. They approved a course that was virtually identical to the perilous course that he took just a few months before the disaster. The speculation is/was that they wanted people to see the ships better, for advertising purposes.

The key word there is SPECULATION... And, even it is true, a good Captain would have refused on safety grounds.

Virtually every word on this thread is speculation, not informed logic. The thread has degenerated into a form of coarse, vulgar entertainment and chest beating.

Seriously? You believe that Cost would feel the need to advertise to an island with a total population of less than 1500 people?

Oh yes, I totally agree. The captain is responsible for the ship, even if they told him to do it, rather than merely encouraging it, it's his job to make the decision not to.

    A) Not just this island, but land all over.
    B) 1500 people, and cameras, cameras that take pictures of ships and load them onto the internet. A picture taken by just one person can reach the eyes of millions.

The thread about the tragedy of Costa Concordia has to be devided into serveral points of view.

    1. The conditions on board the ship before and during the accident.

    2. The accident itself and its cause.

    3. The behavior of the crew of CC during and after the accident.

    3. The behavior and the excuses of Capitano Schettino after the accident.

This tragedy, which was absolutely unnecessary and could have easily be avoided, caused the loss of human lives. No member of this forum, including myself would ever cover this tragedy with humour or any degenerated form of coarse, vulgar entertainment and chest beating. I wish to strongly reject this offence against the members of this forum.

The point which can only be covered with humour by any maritime professional is Capitano Schettino and his absolute intolerable and stupid behavior after the accident and his foolish excuses on TV and in the hearings. This man acts like a complete fool !!!

As a master of a ship being responsible for thausends of human lifes, he has discredited himself (for the rest of his live) as a qualified Captain of anything bigger than a rubber dug, period. And this is no humour, this is bloody serious.

The cause of the tragedy is simple. A big ship hit a rock and sunk. But why could a ship of this size and with the SOLAS safety standards of 2012 hit a rock and consequently sink and why did it cause so many human lives being only a few hundred meters away from shore?

Steering that ship on to a rock was the fault of Schettino and only Schettino, because he was the master of that ship. Maneuvering a big ship in close quarter to land during dawn requires professional watch and guidance on the bridge. Schettino was not a greenhorn. Also he had deskjobs in the company in between, he was in command of ships for a long enough time. At this time of the cruise his place had to be on the bridge and not having a party with some girls somewhere in the rear of this deck. Erverything else is of secondary importance.

Where does Costa come into the picture. The following points are abstracts of preliminary accident reports and bulletins of the Italian Coastguard and no speculations.

Costa Concordia and its sisterships have passed this island on similar tracks before (and believe it or not) after the accident. So it can be assumed this was a planned track.

A significant number of crewmembers had no STCW95 safety training.

A significant number of crewmembers had no knowledge about their Muster Station.

A significant number of crewmembers had no knowledge about lowering and handling of the life boats. Passengers had to guide other passengers into some of the lifeboats and had to lower them themself.

The ship went to sea without safety briefing and muster execise of crew and passengers.

It was common practise on this ship to go to sea with several and consecutive open watertide bulkhead doors below the waterline, in order to make the life of the crew working on this deck easier.

This list could be continued much further.

All this points mentioned above lead to the single fault of the shipowner: Lack of SOP and EP enforcement and training. Inefficiency of the company in supervision and enforcement of rules, laws, normal and emergency procedures caused the losses of human lives after the accident happend.

Cowardice and egoism of the Captain and other crewmembers caused further lives and injuries.

Sorry gentleman, but as a commercial master myself, I take this tragedy personally and showing humour about this caricature of a captain is relieving steam of the boiler.

At that time of the year, when this tragedy happened, cruise ships in the Med are carrying a significant number of elderly people, because it is out of season and cruises are cheaper. This should have caused the company and Schettino and his crew to be even more carefully with the ship and its precious "load" of human lifes.

Mediteranian way of life can not be the substitude for safety!!!!!!!!

Also Costa is out of the law suit in Italy by paying this laughable fine, this case will hopefully be taken to the International Tribune for the Law of the Sea or any other international higher court.

    TBC if you want

I could not believe, what I saw today.

Costa doing a full scale emergency drill for the complete crew in the harbour of Palma. Does this mean, lessons learned?

This is the closest I could get in order to stay legal. But it looked real. In the afternoon, I accidently met passengers of this ship in town. They confirmed, they even had a passenger exercise.:D

    Commander Schettino

This is the original script of the radio communication between Schettino and the Italian Cost Guard Commander in charge of the rescue operation.

    No further comment .

    Costa Concordia Alleged Communication Quotations

Regarding languages and translation from one to another, usage of quotations and phrases in a language, English, which was translated from Italian, do not legitimately exist. Simply put, word for word translation from one language to another is fictional. Application of quotation marks in an english translation of an italian language conversation denotes a bogus document constructed to serve the purpose of the party issuing the purported
    translation.

    Hi,
If you are such a specialist in the Italian language please feel free to correct the problems you see.

I have no idea when you learnt Italian but you might be surprised that like many other languages it has changed a bit in the last few generations.

Also Google translator is an equal opportunity translation service that helps many to understand more than they otherwise might.

    It isn't always perfect.

This translation has been conducted by the Italian authorities, not by me and this version will be the official transcript used in the trial against Schettino because of the many non Italian joint plaintiffs. My Italian friends told me, the Italian sound track version is much worse, because you can hear Schettinos lamentation.

In other words, the purported verbatim translation is not verbatim, and was edited by and for the prosecution.
