    i thought they did not allow any shipbreaking in the EU? i enjoyed the 60 minutes segment. they said they would tow her to a yard in italy to cut her up and expected it to take 2 years to do so. they said the whole salvage job would be in the 400million usd range. also,on another note the sept/oct issue of maritime executuive magazine did a story on TITAN salvage,the company doin the job with alot of info about the job and company..

    Boats (ships) are renamed quite often. I can understand nobody wants to cruise on a boat where 12 (approx) people died after some one blundered. But, I don't understand why she is not repaired, (renamed) and put back into service. These boats (ships) cost a lot to build. It would have to be a fraction of the cost for a rebuild behind some curtain and relaunched.
    Would an insurance company prefer that, or is this beyond the total / salvage rules?

    And if it is scraped, closer, faster, cheaper could be another driving factor. Keeping the labor money close would be cool also. Just hate it when a hull is scrapped like that.

    Another sad thought; Ship designers did NOT learn anything before AND after Titanic, did they.
    I still can not believe that a holed ship would roll and sink.
    Yes it was a big hole, but compared to the size of the hull, really small.

    The hole was pretty big compared to the underwater profile.

    More than one compartment flooded much like the Titanic but in this case the bulkheads were attached to the weather deck.

    There is no such thing as an unsinkable ship, they are designed to withstand a certain amount of flooding but but such a large opening is not foreseen as a part of the design brief as far as I am aware.

    The removal of the funnel is almost complete. They need to do this to gain better access for the Parbuckling process.

    Last month, the salvage company informed the local community that they hope to have completed the work by the end of 2013, however, this is very weather dependent and so they cannot guarentee a completion date.

    Found this site today...I had logged onto the webcam just in time to watch the ship secure the booms and depart:(

    Does anyone have info about when flotation will take place ? and if there is a possibility of having multi-angle webcams installed ? are they private cams or city operated ?
    I have enjoyed the ability to look in on the operations from time to time.:)

    A very common abreviation. It is used in the commercial flying world. They call it CFIT (Controlled flight into terrain). After several bad accidents the FAA and NASA startet a big program with this name. The result was a new aircraft computer system, called TWAS (Terrain warning and avoidance system). It is now standard on all bigger airplanes. And it works!

    A similar system excist for ships equipped with ECDIS (Navplotter for big ships). The system knows the depth over a known position and calculates ships movement and performance (speed, turn rate and turn radius) before hitting the bottom.

    And for italian cruise ship captains there is a punishment tool incoporated. Two electrical wires with 230 Volt, connected to his jewels, instead of an aural warning.

    Where are the good old times, when making love was save and flying and going to the seven seas was dangerous. Today it is the other way around.:D

    Capitano Schettino had his first hearing in court today. It looks like the trial will be opened against him.

    Costa shipping company is out of the game. They settled an agreement with the Italian authorities and paid a laughable fine. The company can not be prosecuted any more. Only long and difficult civil legislation.

    The full blast is now heading towards Schettino. That is the way it is in "Bella Italia". But what did Schettino say: "I didnt do anything" (which is basicly correct).

    "I know You can do it, but if You do something wrong, You are done"!!!!

    If in Germany for example a truck driver is busting his maximum allowed driving time per day and gets caught, not only he gets a ticket, his disponent (ops clerk in the company) is also fined, because he gave him this tight schedule. If I order one of my captains to spill bilge oil in order to save money, I as his boss and shipowner get procecuted and that is absolutely ok.

    IMHO Schettino is an idiot, but Costa is getting away much to easy. The ship and the whole salvage is paid by some insurance company, a new ship is build and under the bottom line, Costa will have made a profit out of it.

    Our "friend" Capitano Schettino has a new excuse. During the hearing he remained silent but his lawyer played "not guilty". Reason: Capitano Schettino was not at the wheel. It was the fault of the helmsman. LMAO:eek:

    B.T.W. He wants ASAP a new command. Does anybody in this forum has cruise ship for him?

    It has probably been in the hands of the Greeks so long that even if it were not a 32 yr old Italian Built Cruiseship that reached the end of its life before going east it would be ready to go south and a bit further east before returning to the west disguised as a car or something else useful - unlike the vessel in the article.

    Capitano Schettino will be lucky to get command of a rubber ducky (children's bath toy) after this... Regardless of what the courts will decide...
