    I heard about that. It sounds like a hoax to me, or at least I hope so. I'm thinking that February is an odd time for a family to be out sailing 65 mile off SF in a 29'. Any opinions or updates from the west coast?

    Here in Jax, all we get is some blond outside the USCG Mayport gate repeating nothing. #$% local news bimbet.
    We may learn more from our friends in NZ in a few days than the local snooze here in Jax.

    i would say lack of experiance had a big part in what happened off the california coast i know that the coast guard had issued warnings about the weather , i also know a lot of people just ignore these or don't moniter the radio at all sad day for sailers wich the best for the familys involved

    Any word yet on whether this is considered real or hoax at this point? As far as the Jacksonville incident is concerned I'd have to speculate they met a ship or barge judging from the pic.

    SF CG is thinking it may have been a hoax, last I read. What part of the vessel do you think that flotsam is in Fla? I had difficulty understanding it.

    I got that feeling from the initial reports. DK if you remember the hoax call last year off NJ. People need to get caught and prosecuted so others realize this isn't a game. These searches can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and put people's lives at risk.

    That wreckage looks like the roof of a cabin from a SF or similar configuration with the bridge ripped off to me. Those two small circular things on the left would be the helm chair bases, in front of that the helm then an L shape setee and a second bench or wet bar to the right (bottom of picture).

    Peculiar bit of info, if i have it correctly, is that the directional CG antenna gave them the supposed position of the sailboat?

    I read that the apporx posn was determined by RDF and radar.

    The boat had no working GPS system, but investigators used its radio signal and radar to determine the call came from an area about 60 miles west of Monterey, where strong winter winds, cold water and big swells made for perilous conditions. Forecasters had issued a weekend advisory warning boaters of rough seas in the area.

    We have been studying the two large pictures. It appears to be the forward deck and the fly bridge deck with out the cowling, bench seats or console. You can make out the pedestal bases for the two helm seats.
    The last remains of a sport cruiser or fisher.

    The last joke on the beach; offshore meth-lab.

    Other than the body had a Venezuela passport, the local snews still has nothing (new blond bimbo on the beach). Still waiting on the story from NZ.

    So they got an actual signal from that location? Did somebody motore out there in those conditions to pull a hoax - strange

    They said it was two very brief broadcasts I believe. That could be hard to track on RDF.

    It might have been a bored watch keeper on a big ship/ trawler who just did it for kicks, USCG should request all ships that were in the area transmit a message on the same freq the distress call was on and see if they can match the radio.

    K1W1 is probably correct as a friend in the CG said from the 1st report that it was a hoax and that he personally thought it was a bored human. I was stunned when he said that 40% of those types of calls are BS.

    It looks like a battery in a battery box in the upper right of the picture.

    Definitely looks like a SF bridge with a Tournament helm layout. Also the foredeck looked like it had cleats/lines for a possible liferaft next to the aft hatch. In another picture I saw at a differnt link, the style of hatch should be a "tell" as to the manufacturer, but I can't quite place it. Definitely looks to be of an older type, maybe mid 80s' SF?

    The deck is consistent with a 1980's Hatteras 50 or 52 Convertible. I'm not seeing anything that would exclude that model. Not sure how it would end up like this.

    Saw that, but even zoomed I couldn't figure it out. My best guess would be that a radar and/or ppossibly a spotlight was mounted on that box and what's inside is some sort of electrical box. Only a guess though. Maybe if someone from the area or someone with a better computer has seen it up close they could enlighten us. Definitely looks like a bridge though so I'm not sure what a battery would be doing there.
