In our quest to find an SF another boat has caught my eye. This vessel is out of state, powered by 12-71 Ns with 400 hrs SMOH.

Understanding all boats are individuals and as such unique, does anyone have experience with a similar vessel/power? Anyone want to venture any guesses (based on very limited data provided) on performance? Expected cruise? Expected fuel burn? Quality? Solid vs cored hull, etc?

    Thanks!

    John

No core, Solid hull like almost all Hatts, bullet proof. Fiberglass tanks that will last as long as the hull. Well built systems like solid copper plumbing, although outdated electrical. All numbered and documented, assuming it hasn't been butchered over the years

Balsa cored decks and FB which may need tending to as usually water will get in but while messy to repair not a huge deal

Blisters possible but cosmetics, no structural effect

Performance? Well, not sure you can use the word but that hull will squash 6 footers as if they re not even there.

The 12v71Ns are excellent assuming the major was a true major and not a spray can job. Surveyor will be able to inspect the liners and rings to check wear

I d guess 16 to 18kts cruise but it will keep that speed while others throttle back to 8kts

As some say "the Blisters" should have been patented by Hatteras, they invented them!
Don't worry too much about them, the hull is so thick it's no deal breaker.

Perfectly said! With full fuel (1400 gallons) full water & 5 P.O.B I will top out at 15 knots. As for waves & swell......she splits them & the ride is great! Just don't expect economy or speed. At hull & Marlin trolling speed the 12V71n's are economical i.e between 6 to 9 knots the consumption is 32 litres per hr or 8 US gall p.h.
At $1.55 per litre for Diesel in Aus I don't push the throttles except for the 10 minutes on the way home to clear the engines.

    Ditto

So, your cruise is going to be 10-12 knots ... 15 knots is probably wide open. My 850hp 12V71TI engines only push my Bertram 54 at 14 knots cruise ... 1500 rpm. Could push 1800 rpm and approx 18 knots but the fuel burn is insane.

Some Bertram 54's do better with the same 12V71TI engines and the 1.75 / 1 transmission ratio. Mine has the 1.5 to 1.

It's probably fair to say the Hatteras is somewhat underpowered with the 12V71N engines.

I'll second the Sam's Marine site ... those guys can help you find the perfect Hatteras!

The fuel burn at 1900 rpms with 12v71TI's is 80gph. They like to run their actually. 1400 rpm's you're at 40gph for both.....

The 53' Hatt SF isn't on plane with 12v71 NA's. It does cruise at around 12 knots......they run nice with 12v71 TI's and do get up on plane at around 21 knots.

Our Bert ('78, 58 x 20' MY) with 12v71TIs (650hp) @ 1900 rpm burn around 45gph (close to factory spec) and run there @ 16 knts. @ 1400, 21 gph (total) and 10 knts. The 650 hp tune won't consume much over 70 gph total @ wot (ours 73gph). TOTAL BOTH ENGINES...
Most TI 2 strokes love it between 1600 to 1900 rpm.
However, your talking Naturals; The largest 525hp N would consume just over 26gph (each) at wot loaded. Roughly work back wards from that.

I do believe that most Bert & Hat owners would agree with me; Ole 71s Ruel...

With Quarter fuel and water and just myself on board, I have achieved 20.5 knots coming back from an anti-foul (bottom paint).

    Kafue,

I have a few GMI-10's on my boat. I haven't seen that specific display page that you're showing. Was that a "canned" page, or did you create it?

Hi Scott, that is the Garmin on Navigation with custom settings.
I don't know what you mean by "canned"?

    Cheers

"Canned" means it is one of the factory pre-configured screens. I don't remember seeing a "factory" screen with the odometer displayed like that. I'll have to take another look.

I wonder about Nat's in the 53. I have seen the aftermath of genius boat mechanics removing the turbos, re-plumbing the exhaust and air systems.
Of course it does not work.
I bring this up because, I can not believe 12v71 Ns are in an ole Bertram.
Not sure she would ever get close to plane.

    Got it.
BTW, I thought you were referring to the large Garmin, didn't read the GMI 10.
I worked with the GM10 until I got the combination I wanted. There is a menu where you can select what features you choose in the combination.

Kafue has the same boat with the 1271N's so ... those are the numbers. Not bad really. What is the total weight of the 53 Hatt SF?

My Bertram 54 is 65,000 lbs. It's surprising how well the 12V71N's push the 53 Hatt.

Yes, I did mess up on that. Kafue quoted 15kts below. Wonder if it's up or pushing?
Interesting, During the '70s, Bertram was into every MPH they could find, Then out another door, slower, more MPG models.
Our Bert 58' MY is over 75,000 lbs.

Kafue - What's it take to do 14 knots? Is that up on plane?

My Hatt is also 65,000 lbs. Speed drops BIG time with full load of fuel.

With the weight the boat is carrying now, 15 knots is throttle full down, that was in 1 to 1.5 metre seas with small swell. No, she is not on the plane at 14 knots.

BTW that consumption figure of 8 gal p.h included an Onan 20kw running the whole trip.

Thanks for all the feedback! For some reason I'm no longer emailed when someone comments on a thread to which I'm subscribed! So I missed all this...

Anyway, thanks again. I'll keep you updated on my search. Getting the legwork done and making a wish list for when my boat sells. Then I can get down to business and actually be in a position to make an offer.

BTW, also "looking" at a 1976 46 Hatt SF with 8-71s...

Thanks! BTW I love your boat, awesome lines. Can't beat that J Hargrave look.
The 53 I'm referencing holds 1000 gal diesel and displaces 61,000 lbs. otherwise very similar...
