"Jobs and Starck became very friendly during the building process and there is no formal contract." That type of arraignment can get a little tricky when one of the friends isn't around anymore.
Architect and designers fees are quite often percentages. I think Stark is likely owed his fee on the original estimate... seems reasonable and is likely the intent of the agreement. What is surprising about the article is that... "Feadship"... apparently quoted 150 and let Jobs off the hook with only 105. Usually, Feadship quotes a price and that is what you pay! Indicates to me Feadship was not really confident or 'really as willing' as one might think to build it... but from the article it seems they stepped outside their business practices. And, that is what is unusual here... stunning to me actually. Surprising they quoted a figure figure and then accepted a lower number. We really don't know the real story... but I doubt Feadship did the thing open ended as that usually creates squabbling down the road... and it is outside their business practices... and they are Dutch!
Known for being conservative and consistent in business practice... if one overlooks the Tulip bubble... a few hundred years ago!
What will be the chances of Stark claiming Jobs said he would be entitled to Free Cr-Apple Products for designing such an Eyesore
Jim ***** started the wedding cake look......I guess Steve Jobs felt ***** was a bit too egotistical, so he only went for the wedding cake slice look.......
Wally: 55 meter (180 ft) Venus: 78 meter (256 ft) Both tri deck, but in terms of proportions totally different I think. Wally is a company that you would expect a yacht such as Venus from, as they tend to build extravagant designs. Hopefully some people will appreciate Venus more if they see her irl. She's really spectacular and groundbreaking. Stunning to see her go by! When she was launched the sum of 125 million euros was mentioned in Dutch media. Seems that was a correct guess. Pity that the ship now gets such unnecessary bad publicity. She deserves better.
It's a shame Starck would try to charge almost 10% commission !!! I hope no one works with him again!!! BBC News reported the yacht cost $138 Million. and Starck wants $11 million and change.... He already received $8 million!! Which is to much! Greedy over paid #$#%%!!
Groundbreaking.... I hope that refers to equipment under her skin like new efficient powerplants extra...? There's not much on the surface that refers to groundbreaking... maybe the "slice of cake". I'd love to see guests using the spa on the fordeck for example... plenty of cover. Better still, would love to see her take on some decent liquid mountains. Also, I think why Wally was/are so successful with there boats is because they have combined proven and acceptable styling and features, with way left field concepts. I feel Starck designs the way he does to irritate people (exterior design work). If the boat (subjects envolved) wanted better publicity, maybe they should of gone with a different designer... someone who's not known for there controversy design style (what were they expecting)... I think Claydon Reeves for example would of done a stellar job! Still no joy. Far
Dutch Newspaper. "de telegraaf" says that the problems between Starck and family of Steve Jobs has been resolved ...............the payments that the family had to pay to Starck have been paid............ Problem solved..............
As I said, 6% is a reasonable designer fee particularly on something as ground breaking as this. The issue that is instructive in this line of this thread is that most people do not understand paying designers... fairly or otherwise. Certainly, everybody can design a yacht on profile layout from copying others. But that is not what design, architecture or engineering is about: It appears Starck provided a full package... not just a profile. To complete the specification, drawing, source the custom and or purchased items is a huge job on a yacht such as Job's. It involves thousands of man hours. Designer anything particularly custom is expensive. For something a little different example: The love of my life is a fashion addict. We, or more properly she is, are currently going through the "dress" for this years Spring Fashion Week in Paris. She is personal friend with most of the top designers and never misses. How this works is amazing much like a yacht. NO I cannot mention this years designer... its a national secret of France! But last year, she decided on Chanel... well she could go trek across the river to Chanel's showroom... and by something off the rack... and it would be fitted... simple lets say that is a 7,000 plus VAT deal... done. Beautiful. But that is not how it works... first the decision is made... then she meets with the designer to discuss... then sketches are made and presented and discussed... more sketches more discussion... lunches and so on until the "design is accepted"... then patterns made and the dress roughly pinned and hand stitched together... on the form... another visit and discussion... lunch... thinking... suggestions mods... coffee or wine... while mods made... ITS OK... then it is put together for a fitting... another visit and fitting... lunch... discussion of accessories (designed at time of design meetings)... another fitting upon being assembled... now all the little custom hand made things they sew on are appearing... finally after weeks of time the dress and accessories are presented... and packaged in the most beautiful packaging you ever see. Lets see the bill... (I never get to see this but I was there last year)... Dress 48,000, shoes 6,300 something, purse 12,700 something, a little jeweled thing/broachy thing 18,000 something... something else total... VAT on everything... etc etc totals some stunning number for an outfit. My eyes roll... High Heel to the instep response... hard! She is not tall enough to discreetly apply the "stick" to the back of the head... as the Caporal's in the Legion fondly and lovingly applied... but exactly the same deal. I say nothing... never ever... as if she saw the bill for most anything on the boat... it would be the French and Indian war an my scalp would be on a tomahawk somewhere. But now imagine on the boat design when she gets involved in the interior... each piece of furniture... each pillow... each pick of art... each dish... each fork and knife... everything in the design gets the same treatment... and its all in French...
Starck and his team worked five years on this yacht, and apparently the owner did not have any problems with that 6%. Considering the name and reputation of Mr Starck, seems perfectly reasonable to me. Every inch of this yacht is custom designed and built, final price tag was relatively low I think.
I think she has a second hot tub on the upper deck. The one on the front deck is indeed very open and has zero privacy. Perhaps meant to be used by crew? I appreciate the guts it takes to have such a marvelous yacht designed and built. Not intended for charter, not intended to speculate with, no average-let's-be-scared-if-someone-won't-like-it attitude, but two very determined and bold people going all out to create something out of the ordinary. Well done, S & Philippe! If she has new technology on board apart from the glass construction, the Apple hardware/software and such? I don't know yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if they spent a lot of time figuring out how to reduce her emissions and fuel consumption.
Delaying payment of the bill saved a lot of fuel - parked at the dock. Hope they are smart enough not to use Apple Maps. Have a Merry and a Happy and keep the faith.
I have been using Mac's sense 2002 and love them, awhile back Apple came up with there map and not sure how it works there but here in Tennessee there work great.
