I currently own a 1990 Carver 3607 aft cabin with bimini and hardtop and I have been offered a trade deal on a 1987 Trojan 50' aft pilot house with fly bridge and twin diesels (don't know size). The offer is my boat and $30,000. Both boats are up to date and in very good condition. I know the Trojan is a little more sea worthy and being larger has more room. I'm asking for opinions from our experienced forum readers as to the value of this trade and comments on the Trojan. Thanks guys.

I knew him before he bought the Trojan. We were berthed side by side. He did own a 36' Marinette and wanted something bigger so he bought the Trojan and then found out he could not handle that size boat, actually he had trouble running the 36 footer, and I can bear witness to that. I have operated many boats in the 50' range and would not have any trouble but I don't know that much about Trojan boats. I am wanting something with more range than my Carver 36. I would not hesitate to take my Carver around the loop but it's fuel range is very restrictive, about 200 mile on a good day.

What model Trojan? I didn't think they made a 50 aft cabin (54 maybe?). We have a Carver 3207 which of course is smaller than yours but our two boats are probably approximately the same height. Coincidentally we also have an older Trojan 44 as a dock neighbor a few slips away. What strikes me most about that boat is the height -- that thing just feels like a skyscraper, and ours are about what, 16' high from the waterline at the top of the bimini? I sit on our flybridge drinking coffee in the morning and still look way up at that Trojan's flybridge. We're on a relatively windy lake (Lewis & Clark on the SD/NE border) and it's all I can do some days to hold a nice controlled passage along the marina fairway. That Trojan must get knocked around something fierce. But maybe the 1987 you're considering has a lower profile. Just as you say, it wouldn't be the size that bothers me as much as the huge wind profile. I would think that thing has to roll really badly at the upper helm.

I don't know the model of the Trojan, he called it a 50' but it could be a 44' and it is an aft cockpit. You are correct about the height, you can get a nose bleed just standing on the fly bridge and it does rock pretty good in the wind. The Trojan was berthed just across the pier from me and when the wind got up I was surprised at how she rocked compared to my Carver 36. I don't have a problem with the rock and roll I'm more interested in cruise range. I'm pretty sure it has twin 671 diesels.

Try to take that Trojan out for a couple of hours and see if it performs and fits your needs, as a first step. If it does, then discuss the terms of a swap. It's very difficult to judge a boat's handling from the dock. Just an idea.

I would for sure take it out for a good run before closing any deal. I wish someone could tell me what kind of range the Trojan has. The current owner never goes more than 10 mile so he has no info on range. As mentioned in earlier post, the current owner previously owned a 36 Marinette and could barely handle it. He had to pull into slip bow first because he did all operations with helm only, never learned how to use engines for control. When he moved up to this larger boat he was in trouble right away. This is his motivation to swap.

Trying listing boat weigh, motors and fuel capacity. There are some pretty knowledable people here who could give you a good estimate with that info.

In 1987 Trojans largest boat was a 46' sportfish called the 14 Meter.

Thanks to all, I knew the old salts on this forum would jump in with help. I have moved about 150 mile from where his Trojan is berthed but will try to get back over there and get the actual model number instead of trying to get info with very generic data. I was hoping that someone would be able to tell me general range and problems just from the aprox. size, style, and engines.

There's just too many variables. To start with, several larger Trojans came equipped with gas, not diesel. That alone could bring your range from 110nm at cruise or maybe 200+nm at hull speed to 250nm at cruise and 600+nm at hull speed. One bottom line we can give you is that Trojan was a respected boat builder. Of course what's happened to a particular boat in the past 30 years though is anybody's guess. Good luck and we look forward to seeing more info on this.

Thanks much. I am sure the Trojan has twin 671 diesels. I need a cruise range of 350 mile or better. From where I'm located I have to make just over 300 mile in one stretch before finding a fuel stop. If I were to make the loop I have to get from mile 210 on the Arkansas River to a fuel stop on the Mississippi. My last fuel stop on the Arkansas River is at Pine Bluff, Arkansas and my best guess is 300 mile min. from there to the next fuel whether I go north or south on the Mississippi.

Well that probably explains why the previous owner didn't cruise much even more than his inability to dock.:D Make a couple of calls to distributors. You can probably have diesel trucked to your location. Many larger diesel boats do it all the time because it's often cheaper and more convenient.

Thanks NYCAP. I have thought of getting fuel that way but first I have to change to a diesel boat, my Carver is a gas burner and it's more difficult to get gas that way. Last summer I cruised down the Arkansas River from Salisaw, OK. to my current location of Russellville, Ar., about 140 mile, I used 2/3rds of my fuel for that run at a little over 8 knts.
