    This I can not agree with because what we see of both A and Venus (and most other yachts) are just the profiles. We like them or dislike them because of what we see. Yacht designers in general knows what you can get into a profile, so this must be the priority to start with after you have got the buyers requirements.

    But with Starck it is different, he want us to react on all his designs. Laugh, admire, discuss or ignore them, he and his clients are going outside the box well aware that the boats may be impossible to resell. They have another purpose; to be seen. Personally I think A is an interesting and in a way elegant design, while Venus is not appealing and more or less stupid. As yachts I am not interested in any of them more than as examples of how far certain clients are prepared to go...

    Great statement Lars, I second it! The thing with Jobs is all his products were cool, sleek, out of the box, massive evolution! His products were loved by the large majority of people, even though a similar product could be twice as good, half the price... People would still buy the apple product.

    This boat "Venus"... more so the designer, is known for his work to be a little.... different, and gets to design Jobs last ever project... I don't get it, it's very different, and doesn't have any new aspects to a vessel that would make it different from anything else out there, it's exterior looks... whats it prooving!

    I would of thought Palladuim would of been a better way to go... completely bonkers, but respect!

    @84far, please lets not forget that this isnt "a product" for jobs...... it was his yacht, and as such it is his personal taste...

    One more thing to admire jobs, if this is what we learn from here: how he was able to put his personal opinion down, and put out products that appealed to the general public so highly, while his personal taste obviously does not....

    Or maybe Jobs just isnt a good mass-appeal yacht deisgner/collaborator :p

    I notice we agree, AMG... after a fashion... as you did sneak in the client's requirements, inferring it was first priority.

    Actually, the first place I start is the slip.

    Anyway, I have been looking back and rethinking the whole of my yacht passion. When I was young the "goal" as to get a Swan 36 after I determined building a wooden boat was a distraction. But by time that happened it was actually a brand new 441. Still have fond memories and love Ron Holland's design.
    In a few years my needs and desires changed and the limitations were paramount, and wealth had multiplied. No longer could I take time to sail and enjoy the vastness of sea working with the elements. And, my love of my life being terrified of drowning drew me away from such quiet enjoyment... . After that it seemed a motor yacht worked better... but now it had to have a steel hull so at least "she" would step aboard in the marina and even allow a short trip close to shore. I can still remember when she first asked how thick the hull was and I said around 6-8mm she was horrified it was so thin thinking it should have been 50-100mm. The trips and time away became shorter. After an upgrade or two it became a place to entertain as it had built in staff... which could tailor to every whim... but all that was no bother at home. Somehow the thickness of the hull was only occasionally remembered... usually just before a long journey or when mistral appeared. A floating palace that was "mine"... and it became the front parlor to her private home on shore. She could live simply and quietly at home and yet have a place to entertain and show off a little to the endless troupe of friends, and the extravagance was all mine. The style became the goal... which when your love is personal friends with the who's who of high fashion... just seem natural. I bought in... and the idea of the vastness of open sea and exhilaration and excitement of the next port of call was forgotten.
    But now I long for a new swan song again. But first I need the slip.

    Firstly I think a good yacht designer needs many years of experience on the water to know how to design a decent boat. Because I find it's when a good/bad experience happens, and boat/design can evolve. Whether she's punching through a big sea and can't handle it, or the transom is destroying the tender everytime you moore it there.

    Secondly, I think most superyacht interiors reflect the owner's tastes more so than the exterior (This is where Starke comes in). Unless an owner is a massive boating person, and knows what he/she wants.

    I still wonder why Starck gets the credit for that design when the US Navy put it on paper as the Zumwalt class destroyer sometime before 2000 and launched a scaled down test version named the "Sea Jet" in 2005.

    Actually, come to think of it, the ancient Greeks were the first to build a reverse bow ship http://cliojournal.wikispaces.com/The+trireme although for a slightly different reason.

    Because the Navy had him do their design... but didn't pay for it...

    So using the Maritime Salvage Law... he dredged it up when Mr. Deep Pockets Job... came along looking for something different.

    I still find it odd that Steve J's yacht looks similar to the 11-18-2005 YF review of "Wally's Wild New 55 meter" yacht.

    Okay, Wally's is missing the shinny cutwater and railing.

    So, 7 years later, Venus arrives with a shinny cutwater, railing, and a warped deck around the foredeck hot tub.

    Seems to me that some Island Yacht designs have warped decks (golf course).

    So, Venus is nothing more than a hodgepodge of various pre-existing designs.

    The Wally concept did look better and more balanced but still there is some uniqueness when it comes to "Venus".

    iCopy is what Apple is famous for in iP (intellectual property) circles...

    Lobbied US Congress very hard, along with Microsoft, for the new changes in US Patent law... to make it harder for small inventors from being about to prevail against the big boys.

    Given the numbers quoted I am not surprised there is some resistance to te exhorbidandt fees claimed.

    I have ibeen OR on a number of yachts bigger than this and have never seen a combined total contract for interior, exterior and lights to exceed 2million Euro.

    I have never heard if a designer asking for a percentage of the build cost, it seems he us riding the wave of popularity , like a lot of waves it will hopefully crash on the rocks - PS not the yacht.

    Whuo! €9 million for designing that! I hate to think a little bit of my iphone's cost has ended up with PS. The only positive thing is this whole incident makes it a bit less likely PS gets hired again. In interior design, PS has been doing the exact same thing for the past 20 years, and it was a breath of fresh air back then, but is very boring by now and doesn't age well, like most histrionic designs.
