Storm hits Porto Cervo.

Wind gale force 8 on the harbour. This happened a couple of days ago. I had heard about it, but couldnt find a video about it.
Now I finally have.

I've been in Porto Cervo in August when the weather has been like that, hard work with all the fenders and lines.

While the boats were rocking and rolling, one young owner wanted to take the boat out. The skipper of the 30m sportsboat said "No Way" and after a very public arguement with the owner, walked off the boat.

The owner then tried to take the boat out himself, got mooring chains wrapped around the shafts and props. The boat was stuck in the fairway for most of the day while divers cleared the debris. A very expencive day out, even after the owner throw the wicker furniture all over the aftdeck.

I was just about to post that video right here! Guess you got to it before me. Anyways, that must have been scary for the crew, keeping the yachts from not smashing into each other. Well I should say softening the blows by extra fendering.

WOW...that has to be one of the scariest videos I have seen regarding yachts...I cannot imagine how tough it was to keep all of those yachts from tearing each other apart...three cheers to the crews of the tossing yachts!!

This video would be a good reminder to the designers who think protruding wing stations look smart...

Well Lars the bigger yachts have those bubble wing stations outside of the bridge but some of them have sliding platforms that jettison from the bulwark allowing a better view down the side of the yacht for maneuvering. They can be slid back into the existing structure flush causing no protruding problems, "Lady Moura", "Vava ii" spring to mind with these sytems.

Off course the retractable wing stations do just that, but I was talking about all that doesn´t and they are fitted to smaller and smaller yachts. Not only are they exposed in situations like this, but also when you move your boat and the boat beside you have them. It takes special fenders and crew to handle them and the benefit of these wing stations on yachts under 200 feet is zero.

My folks are in Porto Cervo at the moment
They are staying at the Hotel Cervo Sheraton(graded as a 5star but not worth it.....very outdated)
and although they are enjoying the weather, they were shocked how empty the marinas are.
I know that they are early in the season but really no people at all and all the empty shops.
One part of Porto Cervo is deserted with only empty shops a ghost shopping center .

Once every hour there is a bus with a tour guide that stops.
But trust me with all respect, the people that come out of the tour bus aren't the people who can afford to buy stuff at Porto Cervo.

Seems like the Crisis really struck bad here.

You will find it a relative ghost town the first weekend after the summer holidays finish too.

I was there one season on the last weekend, it was like someone had turned the power off by the middle of the following week, the place was deserted.

I can understand that it's hard to have a shop there if it's only busy for about 3 months a year.

there are two shopping areas in Porto Cervo the old area was still pretty nice with a few empty shops. But the new area that opened in 2008 was literally all empty not one shop!!!

24 degrees celsius and not one beachclub open.......

Such a shame for an area with great coves, scenery and beautiful beaches.

Looks very empty indeed...

Just the crisis or are there other structural reasons why it's a ghost town and ghost marina?

I was at Porto Servo some years ago at the begiinning of April. The place was deserted like on these pictures. And that was way before the crisis. They have a short and busy season and thats it.

Heesens "Galactic star" seems to be enjoying Porto Cervo. She has been there all week.

I know the video was posted a couple years ago but how do those yachts in that storm video not destroy each other ? There had to be extensive damage, right ? Why would they leave them so **** close knowing a storm is approaching ? Nerve wracking watching that video.

Now should be the busiest time of the year for Porto Cervo, but it still looks pretty calm............
