Nice looking helis. I just bought this Blade 120 SR and a Spektrum DX6i to try and learn enough to fly one of the big ones without going through thousands in repairs. Phoenix Professional RC FlightSim v4.0 is supposed to be the best out there right now for helis. I also liked that I can use my DX6i to control it. I just learned that one of the reasons my 120 SR has been uncontrollable is a servo is binding. A replacement is coming and maybe I'll be able to actually fly the thing.

Watched a guy on the beach in Santa Barbara with a quad copter. Pretty cool show. Nearly better than the fireworks show we watched.

I saw this video and was going to post it here for Carl and others as well. Nothing beats southern hospitality.
Good grief...I have NEVER seen such control of a RF helicopter....VERY impressive...as far a flight sims go, I am eying and lusting after some killer Samsung monitors with very thin side bezels that would be stunning set side to side for flight sims... Cheers,
It's been two years since I built my Align 700E. Last week, I decided to break the bird out of jail and set it free. On Sunday, I flew for the first time in 6 years. I was so rusty I needed a can of WD-40 squirted between my ears. I'm glad to say both pilot and machine returned in one piece. I'm also happy to report this is the most amazing machine I've ever flown. It is easily 2 to 3 times more powerful then my best nitro machines. Best of all, it's quiet. All you hear is the blades. When the flight was over, the last thing I heard was my heart pounding. I've missed that sound! For that reason, I may be MIA for a day or two during the holidays... at the flying field! Over the weekend, I learned about a new, larger machine from Align. It's the 800 Trekker. This thing is HUGE and capable of carrying a gimbal housing and camera equipment. Here's a video showing all the new tricks this old dog can't do... Align T-Rex 800 trekker hard 3d flight by Sergio from PiroF - YouTube
I've been laying low on the forum recently, but I have an excuse. I'm struggling with an addiction that has tormented me for nearly 30 years. I'm convinced that r/c transmitters emit more than radio waves. Why else would a human be so compelled by a machine! Last weekend, I attended the 2012 Orlando Helicopter Blow Out, the first heli event I've been to in about a decade. About 300 pilots in attendance including lots of old friends, literally... they're all old now! Although I brought a machine with me, I spent most of the weekend observing in disbelief; astonished at the level of pilot proficiency, which is directly attributable to flight simulators. After the 1999 U.S Nationals, I retired from competition, but technology technology marched on. This past Saturday night, I realized I was a relic when a pilot from Switzerland took to the air with the most remarkable set of rotor blades I've ever seen. For the uninitiated, heli night flights are a real spectacle and sometimes a nuisance for local authorities who have to respond to UFO reports when a night flight is held. Yep, saw it! Sent the link to a couple of friends this morning. At first, I thought quad's & hex rotor craft were an anomaly; a fad. Today, I think they're bad @$$! Check out the latest stuff from DJI Innovations... DJI-Innovations | Flight Control Experts Their commercial grade platforms are essentially evolutions of DOD and MIT research projects that were considered cutting edge only a few years ago. I'm considering 'investing" in one of these platforms for assorted YF & JF projects, but I'm struggling with applications. Do I really have a need, or is it simply a want? The DJI Phantom is capable of all the same autonomous maneuvers as the much more expensive S800, but it will only carry a Go-Pro and doesn't have a gimbal housing that will tilt and pan a D-frame camera. I'm about to log-off and head up the coast to the Space Coast Heli Championships up in Cocoa Beach. This will be my first competition since 1999. I haven't practiced any of the new FAI/F3C maneuvers so I'm just going to be a spectator and maybe... a heckler.
Thanks for sharing the DJI link, I hadn't run into them, very awesome products. I think there's a place for high quality from the air video productions, especially for the high end yacht charter business... their web pages start to look like a blur after a while and a good video can create a lot of buzz. YF doing reviews that include a video would be fun to do, and let you write off the gizmos! I'm working an effort relating to air wake sensing behind ships... the little UAVs are having trouble where the full sized helo's don't. Here's a link to an R&D effort (not mine) that shows the downside of ops over the water... good stuff starts at about 2:00 (adult language warning...) I believe the RC is a TREX. That's an extremely unusual - almost impossible - event. Main rotor blades don't just "let go" for no reason and certainly not BOTH at the same time! The only way this could conceivably happen is if one of the main blade grip bolts that threads into the spindle shaft sheared. It is improbable that the bolt backed out because the root of the main blade would prevent the bolt from completely de-threading. And yes, it looks like an Align T-Rex in the video. Here's my flock a' birds...
