Little Help from the Crew. Hey guys need a little help from you generator experts. I have a crack in my Manifold cap on a Kohler 7.5 R Generator. Part #2412728. It's cast and a Beoch to have welded. Talked to the guys at Wavetop.com and no luck. Anyone else have a contact for these type of parts? Internet search came up empty. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks in advance. phil

KOHLER GENERATOR on 1986 CARVER We have a Kohler 7.5 generator on our Carver that will automatically stop after 15 minutes if our AC is on. It will run forever (over an hour) if it's just powering the refrigerator and lamps. We had it serviced and he said he cleaned out the heat exchange, but it still stops after 15 minutes if the AC is on. ANY IDEAS?
If it runs solid and steady under load, then drops & dies; Fuel starvation. No load and it runs & runs, then under load, it slowly drains the bowl and rolls over (dies). I don't remember a factory secondary fuel filter. Check your fuel filter and check for air leaks. You may even have old gas varnish and/or trash in the carb bowl. A little tweak on the main jet adjustment, protruding under the fuel bowl may be all that is needed to clear some varnish & trash. Make sure you move the screw back exactly to it's original position. Dealing with a gas generator is NOT like working on the ole lawn mower, Poor maintenance and CO gos up and other things like people roll over. YOU DO HAVE A CO DETECTOR OR TWO ON BOARD, RITE?. Find a real qualified mechanic on board if these little things don't help and let us know the outcome. ,rc
It runs hot when it has a load. We did change the impeller and good water flow is present. Can you clean a heat exchanger?
How hot is hot? Anybody shot it with a gun (infrared heat gun) yet? A must have tool for any boat owner and mechanic is a heat gun ($40 at Harbor Freight). I remember the H/E on those 4 cly Kohler, Pretty massive for what it does. If you have water out the tail end, in my opinion, it's not the H/E. You could remove the thermostat in the head but again were just guessing with out knowing if it's really getting hot. I think that shutdown sensor was a 205 degree switch, the thermostat was around 180/190 ish. Under heavy load 190 could be o k along the whole head. Notice any uneven readings from cylinder to cylinder (if you had a gun). Another thought, What oil you running in her? Straight, fresh 30w? Those oil pumps never failed also but thin oil or old pressure sending switch shuts them down, on the same wire also. ,rc
If your temp gauge is accurate, (most are close enough), take the cover off the heat exchanger (4ea 1/4x20 bolts) and pull out the heat exchanger core, take it to the closest radiator shop and have it boiled out. Make a new gasket for the cover, (or buy one) and put the thing back together. Make sure you have water flow and if your exhaust riser is ok, the thing will run another 20 years, if you have any more problems, may I suggest that at this point what I would do is hire a professional and have the thing fixed.
